KCK couple accused of crashing car into Cabela’s, attempting to steal guns

A man and a woman from Kansas City, Kansas, were indicted Wednesday on federal charges of crashing a car into a Cabela’s store and stealing guns, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said.

Kyle Mendez, 29, Kansas City, Kansas, and Brenda Tosh, 27, Kansas City, Kansas, were charged with one count of conspiring to steal guns from a federally licensed firearms dealer.

In addition, Mendez was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of firearms by a convicted felon and one count of transporting a stolen 2014 Dodge Challenger across state lines. The crimes are alleged to have occurred Nov. 6, 2018, in Kansas City, Kansas.

The indictment alleges the defendants entered the Cabela’s store in Kansas City, Kansas, by crashing a car through an exterior door.

Mendez allegedly smashed through a locked door to get into the store’s Gun Library, according to the indictment. The defendants allegedly took long guns from the firearms section of the store and placed them into a shopping cart, according to the indictment. The guns included two 12-gauge shotguns, a .22-caliber rifle, a .308-caliber rifle and a .223-caliber rifle.

Before the defendants could get away with the guns, however, law enforcement officers arrived at the store, prosecutors stated. Tosh was arrested at the scene. Mendez fled from the store and was arrested later.

Upon conviction, the crimes carry the following penalties:
• Unlawful possession of firearms by a felon (count one and count two): Up to 10 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.
• Theft from a federally licensed firearms dealer (count three): Up to five years and a fine up to $250,000.
• Transporting a stolen car (count four): Up to 10 years and a fine up to $250,000.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Oakley is prosecuting.

The Bonner Springs boys basketball team came from a 10-point deficit to beat Piper in Bonner Springs on Tuesday night.

The win pulls the Braves (7-1 Frontier League, 15-2 overall) within a half-game of the league-leading Pirates (8-1, 13-4) and sets up some drama for the closing days of the regular season.

The Pirates started strong, limiting Bonner’s penetration, and rejecting shots from the paint. At times Piper positioned Braijion Barnes squarely in front of the basket to protect the rim. A run early in the second quarter shot Piper to a 20-10 advantage.

The Braves rallied late in the second half, briefly taking the lead before Piper got two consecutive stops and a 26-24 halftime lead.

The Pirates started strong out of the halftime break, but their lead evaporated as Braves guard Keyon Thomas heated up, hitting two 3-pointers and finding some open driving lanes.

In one thrilling segment of the third quarter, Thomas and Rishaud Dockery traded 3-pointers with the Pirates’ Braijion Barnes, sending the packed student sections of both teams into an uproar. Bonner finished the quarter with a 44-37 advantage.

Piper’s Tamar Bates shifted into overdrive in the fourth quarter, picking up 12 points, including two 3-pointers. However, Bonner was able to maintain their margin and closed out the game.

The night ended on a sour note when a brief shoving match broke out in the handshake line, getting both teams sent straight to the lockers.

Thomas led the Braves with 29 points. Rishaud Dockery added 14, and was 5-of-6 from the line.  A.J. Watson scored 11.

Tamar Bates paced the Pirates with 20 points, while Trey Bates scored 13.

Bonner Springs will play on Friday at Louisburg. Piper’s next game is a non-conference game at home against Schlagle next Tuesday.
