A moment of silence was held at Thursday night’s Unified Government Commission meeting for former Commissioner Benoyd “Butch” Ellison.
Ellison, 79, a former UG commissioner and an educator in Kansas City, Kansas, died Feb. 13.
Ellison played on the University of Kansas varsity basketball team in the 1960s, and was named an All-American Basketball Player in 1958 at KCKCC.
Before retirement, he was an instructor and administrator for 37 years in the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools. He was an administrator at Washington High School and was also a former director of the Kansas City, Kansas, Model Cities Program.
Ellison graduated from Sumner High School and received an associate degree from Kansas City Kansas Community College. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kansas in 1962, and his Master of Science in Education Administration from KU in 1972.
He served as a UG commissioner from 2001 through 2013.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Thatcher Funeral Home.
A winter weather advisory will be in effect from 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, through 6 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, according to the National Weather Service.
More snow is expected tonight, according to the weather service.
The forecast for tonight calls for snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain, before 3 a.m., followed by more snow and freezing drizzle from 3 a.m. to 4 a.m., then a chance of snow after 4 a.m., the weather service said. About an inch of snow is predicted in Wyandotte County.
Roads may become slippery and visibility may be affected, according to the weather service. Motorists should use caution.
Today, there is a 40 percent chance of snow, mainly after 5 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 28 with an east wind of 6 to 9 mph.
Tonight, there is an 80 percent chance of snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain before 3 a.m., then snow and freezing drizzle between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.,then a chance of snow after 4 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 22 with an east wind of 5 to 8 mph becoming calm after midnight. Little or no ice accumulation is expected. New snow accumulation may be about an inch.
Sunday, it will be mostly cloudy, with a high of 30 and a west northwest wind of 5 to 11 mph, gusting as high as 21 mph, the weather service said.
Sunday night, the low will be around 16 with a northwest wind of 7 to 9 mph, according to the weather service.
Monday, Presidents Day, it will be partly sunny, with a high near 28 and a north northwest wind of 7 mph, the weather service said.
Monday night, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 16, according to the weather service.
Tuesday, there will be a 50 percent chance of snow after noon, with a high near 27, the weather service said.
Tuesday night, there will be an 80 percent chance of snow, with a low of 22, according to the weather service.

Democrats scheduled to meet Saturday
The Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast is scheduled to meet on Saturday morning, Feb. 16, at Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The speakers will be Unified Government Mayor and CEO David Alvey and State Rep. Pam Curtis, D-32nd Dist., chair of the Wyandotte County legislative delegation. A breakfast buffet will be available at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, with the forum at 9 a.m. The cost of the breakfast is $10, or $6 for students and those on limited incomes. Black History Banquet scheduled Feb. 16 The 27th annual Black History and Scholarship Banquet will be Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Jack Reardon Convention Center, 500 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The host of the event is the Unified Government Black History Committee. The social hour will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the banquet at 6 p.m. The keynote speaker this year is Tyrone Flowers, a native of Kansas City, Missouri, who is the founder of Higher M-Pact, a community-based organization dedicating to transforming youth into leaders. Flowers faced many challenges growing up during his childhood, but his determination and faith brought him through the adversities in life to fulfilling his God given-purpose. He will address this year’s theme, “21st Century Expressions: Dreams, Struggles and Wisdom.” In addition to the keynote speaker, this year the achievements of two successful business owners and a professional who is making a difference in the community will be highlighted. Despite the challenges of access to capital, business resources and discriminatory practices, minority entrepreneurs have overcome challenges to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. The main highlight and purpose of the event is the recognition of local colleges and check presentation in support of promising students who have a desire to pursue a post-secondary education. Dance planned Saturday evening
A Valentine Dance will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at St. Mary-St. Anthony parish basement, 615 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Tickets will be $20 for adults, with children under 5 free. The dance and meal are sponsored by the German American Edelweiss Society.
