Black Men and Women of Distinction Awards Ceremony to be Sunday, Feb. 25

In honor of Black History Month, Friends of Yates, Inc., has invited the community to celebrate the accomplishments of African American community leaders. The 38th Annual Black Men and Women of Distinction Awards Ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018, at Friends of Yates 1418 Garfield Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. It is because of the groundbreaking accomplishments of African American leaders and pioneers of the past, determined to see positive change, that African American leaders and pioneers of today continue to break barriers, reach new heights and accomplish many things that were once considered impossible, a spokesman said. Free tax preparation offered
Beginning in February, AARP will provide free tax preparation services from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs, Kansas. The program continues every Tuesday from Tuesday, Feb. 26, through Tuesday, April 9. Volunteer tax preparers will be at the Bonner Springs Library from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This location will be a walk-in site and people do not have to sign up in advance. There is a list of what items you should bring, available at the library’s checkout desk. Opening day at lake postponed
The opening day at Wyandotte County Lake, originally scheduled for Saturday, March 2, has been postponed until March 16, weather permitting, because of ice on the lake. In conjunction with the lake opening, the Leavenworth Road Association will sponsor a biscuits and sausage gravy breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. March 16 at the marina at Wyandotte County Lake.. The cost of the breakfast will be $10 for adults and a smaller portion at half-price for children 12 and younger. Breakfast includes two biscuits, sausage gravy, two sausage patties, coffee, milk or orange juice. The breakfast is a fundraiser for the Leavenworth Road Association.

Exercise program offered for older adults

Two legislative coffees set for Saturday, March 30
The League of Women Voters, the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library and the Bonner Springs City Library will hold legislative coffees on Saturday, March 30. One coffee will begin at 10:30 a.m. March 30 at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave. A second coffee will be held at 1:30 p.m. March 30 at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton, Bonner Springs. Legislators who are planning to attend the coffee at the KCK library include Sen. David Haley, D-4th Dist., Sen. Kevin Braun, R-5th Dist., Rep. WyCo Ethnic Festival to be April 13
The WyCo Ethnic Festival will be Saturday, April 13, at the Kansas City Kansas Community College field house, 7250 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Hours of the event are 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Music, dance and educational booths are planned at the festival. The festival promotes better understanding among people of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. There is no admission charge to the festival, and it is open to the public. Thunderstorm possible tonight

A significant weather advisory has been issued for Wyandotte County, according to the National Weather Service.

A strong thunderstorm was spotted at 4:01 p.m. over Olathe, moving northeast at 30 miles per hour.

Half-inch hail is possible with the storm, the weather service said. Kansas City, Kansas, Bonner Springs and Edwardsville are in the path of this storm.

A wind advisory also is in effect for Wyandotte County through 6 a.m. Sunday, according to the weather service.

Sustained winds may cause problems for high-profile vehicles, the weather service said.

Winds may gust as high as 28 mph this afternoon, and are changing from south southeast to southwest, then to west northwest tonight.

Tonight, winds may be from the southwest at 11 to 16 mph, becoming west northwest 18 to 23 mph in the evening, gusting as high as 46 mph, according to the weather service.

The temperature was near 45 at 4 p.m. Saturday. Rain or freezing drizzle is possible before midnight, then a slight chance of snow and freezing drizzle between midnight and 1 a.m., the weather service said.

Sunday will be sunny with a high of 34, the weather service said. A northwest wind 13 to 16 mph may gust as high as 31 mph.

Shooting under investigation in KCK

Kansas City, Kansas, police are investigating a shooting at about 3:55 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, in the 1400 block of State Avenue.

According to a police spokesman, when officers arrived, they found a man in his late 30s, suffering from a gunshot wound.

The man had non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital, the spokesman stated.

The shooting is under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department Criminal Investigations Division, which is encouraging anyone with information to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
