Speed limits, Turkey Creek bank stabilization on tonight’s UG committee meeting agenda

A change to the city’s maximum speed limits and a bond issue for Kaw River Bank stabilization at Turkey Creek are on tonight’s Unified Government Public Works and Safety Committee meeting.

The UG’s Public Works and Safety Committee will meet at 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, in the fifth-floor conference room, Suite 515, of City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

A proposed ordinance would set 25 mph as the maximum speed for streets in residential areas and 20 mph in any park, according to the committee agenda.

In other action, the committee is being asked to approve a resolution amending the capital maintenance improvement plan for Kaw River bank stabilization at Turkey Creek, and issue general obligation bonds or temporary notes to finance all or a portion of the costs of the improvement.

• A proposed resolution in the agenda refers to up to $10 million as the maximum amount of general obligation bonds that could be needed.

• Also on the Public Works and Safety Committee are a resolution authorizing a survey of land necessary to be acquired for the Lombardy Drive sewer improvement project;

• An agreement with the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools to share student information in the OK Program, a mentorship and community program through the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department and Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools;

• An agreement with Fire District 1 of Leavenworth County to provide automatic fire and EMS services in times of emergencies, natural disasters and manmade catastrophies;

• An ordinance requiring temporary retail establishments selling fireworks to have four fire extinguishers, increasing the distance between adjacent tents and buildings, requiring the temporary retail fireworks location to have deliveries made directly to the fireworks stand, and requiring permit holders to maintain lists of items held on the premises;

• An update on the construction of the Memorial Hall parking lots and Juvenile Justice Center.

Also scheduled Tuesday evening is a meeting of the UG Administration and Human Services Committee, directly following the Public Works and Safety Committee meeting.

On the agenda for the Administration and Human Services Committee meeting:

• An ordinance allowing the fire marshal to enforce violations of the prohibition on open burning;

• An ordinance amending the fire code, on recordkeeping for fire alarm systems and fire suppression systems;

• A presentation on changing to a new electronic medical record for the Health Department in June 2019;

• An update on the 311 contact center and the use of the myWyco app on 311 requests.

Carjacking reported

A carjacking was reported on Monday morning near 34th and Brown, according to a social media post by the police chief.

A 1997 gold Toyota Camry was reported stolen by a man armed with a knife, according to the chief’s post. The suspect fled northbound on I-635. There were no injuries.

Shooting reported
In another case, a shooting was reported Sunday, Feb. 24, in the 1800 block of North 24th, according to a social media post by the police chief.

Accident reported
Two persons were taken to the hospital with severe injuries after an accident on Sunday at 29th and Parallel, according to a social media post by the police chief.

Pursuit ends in car crash
On Saturday, officers responded to shots being fired from cars and attempted to stop one of the vehicles with five males inside, according to a social media post by the police chief.


The driver fled, and officers pursued the vehicle. After the vehicle spun out, an officer was standing near the driver’s door telling the driver to put his hands up, when the driver sideswiped the door, and the officer pursued the vehicle again.


The vehicle went into the Brookside neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri, where the driver struck another car, with injuries reported to the occupants of the other car. Five persons in the vehicle were taken into custody.

Trash day changes for some residents

Trash routes for about 14,381 residents will change starting this week, according to the Unified Government.

Those residents whose routes were changed were sent a postcard a few weeks ago with their new trash day listed.
