Storm water open house planned Tuesday

An open house on the storm water user fee in Kansas City, Kansas, will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Armourdale Community Center, 730 Osage Ave., Kansas City, Kansas.

The open house is an opportunity for residents to drop in between 4:30 and 7 p.m. Tuesday and talk with city staff about the current storm water system’s needs, give their opinions and ask questions.

Another open house on the storm water user fee is scheduled from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kansas.

Two earlier open houses were held on this topic.

Currently, BPU customers pay $4.50 a month for the storm water fee. The Unified Government is discussing increasing the fee, with different rates for different categories.

For example, a residential customer under the proposal would pay $5.90 a month on a property with impervious area of 1,209 to 3,626 square feet, and $10.62 a month on a property of 3,627 to 6,044 square feet.

In another example, a retail store with 39,800 square feet and an impervious area of 20,300 square feet would pay $49.50 a month.

In another example of undeveloped land without hard surfaces, a 95,000-square-foot lot would pay about $21 a month.
