Storm water open house planned Tuesday
An open house on the storm water user fee in Kansas City, Kansas, will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Armourdale Community Center, 730 Osage Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The open house is an opportunity for residents to drop in between 4:30 and 7 p.m. and talk with city staff about the current storm water system’s needs, give their opinions and ask questions. BPU to hold special sessions Jan. 10 and 11

Extension gardeners’ program topic to be ‘Tomatoes and Peppers’
The Wyandotte County Extension Master Gardeners are sponsoring a program on Thursday, Jan. 10, on the topic of “Tomatoes and Peppers.” Dr. Chuck Marr, Kansas State University professor emeritus, will present the program. It will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sunflower Room, Wyandotte County Extension Office, 1216 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The program is open to the public. Grinter Place to continue Second Saturday series on Jan. 12
Grinter Place will continue its Second Saturday speakers series on Jan. 12. The program will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, and the topic will be “How the Junior League Helped Save the Grinter House and How Volunteers Built the Grinter Event Space Barn,” presented by Georgia Howlett. The historic Grinter House is at South 78th and K-32 in Kansas City, Kansas. In conjunction with the free program, there will be free doughnuts, coffee or juice. Each program will be about 35 minutes long. After the program, there will be the opportunity for questions and comments. Tours of the Grinter House also will be available, for an admission fee of $6 for adults and $3 for students. The Second Saturday Speaker Series will present educational programs about the history of Grinter House, the oldest home still standing in Wyandotte County, and the area. Future programs in the Grinter Second Saturday Speaker Series include Feb. 9 – topic and speaker to be determined; and March 9 – “March Madness James Naismith First Person Re-Enactment,” presented by Bill Nicks. Grinter House closed for the winter on Oct. 13 and opens again on March 13. Regular hours from March 13 to Oct. 12 will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday.

Schlagle Library and the James P. Davis Hall at the lake park, 91st and Leavenworth Road. Live bird exhibits are being provided by Operation Wildlife. Crews battle fire on North 10th Street

Kansas City, Kansas, firefighters attacked a blaze at an old school district warehouse at 313 N. 10th St. on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 5. The fire started in the east end of the building and burned to the west end on 10th Street. Cars inside the facility, now rented for storage, were destroyed. Crews were trying to keep the fire out of the east end, where there is a machine shop. Police and fire authorities are looking for a white male approximately 6-foot-1, wearing Carhartt work apparel, who may have information about the cause of the fire. The fire started in the east end of the building and burned to the west end on 10th Street.

Cars inside the facility, now rented for storage, were destroyed.
