Life comes full circle for KCK native who coaches professional basketball

Ed Corporal

by Mary Rupert

Walking into the Hy-Vee Arena (the former Kemper Arena) recently brought back memories for Kansas City, Kansas, product Ed Corporal.

Corporal, the head coach of the Kansas City Tornadoes professional basketball team, is preparing for the season home opening weekend on Friday, Jan. 11 and Saturday, Jan. 12, against the Raleigh Firebirds. The games will begin at 7 p.m. at Hy-Vee Arena, Kansas City, Missouri.

The Tornadoes are in The Basketball League, formerly the North America Premier Basketball League.

Corporal, who has been a coach for 31 years, describes the Tornadoes as a “very, very up-tempo team.” At the same time, it will be a smart, tough team that plays very aggressive defense, he added.

“Our team is equivalent to an NBA team in height and limb,” he said. It’s more of a development team, where players go to get ready for the NBA G league and the NBA, he added. They work on their skills at this level. Last year, the team went 15-15 and was one game away from the finals.

“If you come to watch, you’ll see a very exciting team,” he said, adding it may be similar to watching the Kansas City Kings. Previously Corporal was the Tornadoes’ assistant coach.

Otis Birdsong, a former player for the Kansas City Kings, is the president of the Tornadoes, is one of Corporal’s inspirations, and is like his brother, he said.

From Kansas City Kings ballboy to Tornadoes coach

Corporal recalled his days as a ballboy for the Kansas City Kings in the 1980s.

“Now walking in the building, through the tunnels, I started having flashbacks of when I was a ballboy getting things for the players and coaches, and here I was walking in like Cotton Fitzsimmons, the coach of a professional team,” Corporal said. “It’s come full circle.”

Corporal said he’s very humbled by the experience. Just being a coach in his hometown is very special to him, he added. It has been a long way since his younger days at Stony Point South School.

“It’s a very good feeling,” he said. “It’s really just enjoyable knowing I’m in KC, and being a KCK kid and becoming a professional coach in my hometown.”

Since those days as a ballboy, Corporal has played basketball at Schlagle High School, Kansas City Kansas Community College and Pittsburg State University. He has a bachelor’s degree in management from MidAmerica Nazarene University.

Besides being inspired by Birdsong, Corporal said he was inspired and mentored by Cotton Fitzsimmons and Walt Shublom.

While he did not play for Wyandotte High School, Corporal formerly attended Shublom’s basketball camp at KCKCC, and he was in seventh grade at Arrowhead Middle School when he first met Shublom.

“By the time I went to high school, he took me under his wing,” Corporal said. Corporal became a counselor in one of Shublom’s sports camps in Liberty, Missouri.

Another big influence on Corporal’s coaching career was Randy Springs, who coaches at Sumner Academy, Wyandotte and Topeka. Corporal worked under him for 10 years at Sumner Academy.

Corporal is a past coach for three Kansas high school championship teams at Schlagle and Sumner Academy.

Corporal also previously served as head coach of the Arkansas RiverCatz in the American Basketball Association and was associate head coach for the Arkansas RimRockers. He also has coached at Pittsburg State and at Park University.

Overcoming stroke

Few people have faced the challenges that Corporal has faced and come through them. Five years ago, Corporal had two massive strokes within 24 hours, leaving him paralyzed and unable to walk.

He was coaching volleyball at Perry-Lecompton school at the time and it happened in the middle of the season, he recalled. He spent about a year-and-a-half undergoing physical therapy, learning how to walk again.

“I had to work really, really hard to recover from that,” Corporal recalled. “I spent four months at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. I was in Tonganoxie another two months.”

When he went home after six months, he had to continue rehabilitation. He had to walk with a cane and walker for a while, then gradually he got better, and returned to coaching, he said.

During his recovery period, he helped out around the University of Kansas men’s basketball program with mentoring and other tasks. He was asked to come back to Sumner Academy to help with the team.

Mentoring young athletes

Corporal has a place in his heart for young athletes in Kansas City, Kansas. He has met with administrators in the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools and offered his assistance in helping to be a mentor for young athletes and also for coaches. The team plans to go to high schools and middle schools in the district and hold practices there, he said.

“Our guys go and speak to young men and women about life skills and things going on in their lives, academics, peer pressure, making life decisions,” he said. Also, each school will receive tickets to attend a Tornadoes game.

If he is asked by youth for advice, he emphasizes education.

“What I would tell any young kid, especially in the KCK school district, first and foremost is get your education,” he said. “Classroom and academics, that’s very important. Without that you can’t get to the next level to play or coach. Try to get in college and get a degree, whether you’re going to be a player or not.”

“I would tell them take your education very, very serious because it will open up a lot of doors for you,” Corporal said. “You’ve got to be prepared. One thing school teaches you is how to manage time.”

Eagle Days to be Jan. 19-20 at Wyandotte County Lake Park

Update: Because of snow in the forecast for Saturday, Jan. 19, the Eagle Days schedule has been changed to Sunday-only. The hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library and at the James P. Davis Hall at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 91st and Leavenworth Road, Kansas City, Kansas.

Visitors and residents will have an opportunity to see majestic bald eagles in the wild and up-close during the 18th Annual Eagle Days at Wyandotte County Lake, Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 19 and 20.

This free event will take place at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library and James P. Davis Hall located at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 91st and Leavenworth Road in Kansas City, Kansas. Both sites will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Event activities will include live bird presentations, craft areas for kids, and binocular checkout for viewing birds along the lake. This setting is an excellent place to catch a glimpse or photograph eagles and waterfowl in their natural habitat.

Educational presentations are scheduled for the entire weekend courtesy of Operation Wildlife volunteers. Exhibits and presentations can be seen at F.L. Schlagle Library and James P. Davis Hall. Both locations will offer a fun and unique experience for all ages, plus each site will feature a different collection of birds.

Eagle facts: The bald eagle acquired its name from early English settlers when the word “bald” meant “white.” Young birds develop their distinctive white head and white tail around age four or five.

Male and female birds look very similar except in size where females tend to be larger. Male and female bald eagles typically mate for life forming pair bonds and lay one to three eggs a year.

Several kinds of fish make up most of the bald eagle’s diet, but these birds prey on a variety of creatures based on what’s available. They also enjoy dining on amphibians, birds, reptiles, and mammals.

The once endangered bird due to hunting and harmful pesticides now thrives under protection. In the winter, bald eagles can be found near large bodies of water throughout most of the continent, especially if there’s access to open water for fishing.

Eagle Days at Wyandotte County Lake is presented by Operation Wildlife; the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library; Kansas City Board of Public Utilities; the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library; Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools; and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, Parks and Recreation Department. First-place finishers in the Western Conference last year, Sporting will open the 2019 MLS campaign against LAFC on Sunday, March 3, at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles.

Manager Peter Vermes’ side will host Philadelphia a week later in their first of 17 home dates, which consist of nine Saturday matches, five Sunday fixtures, two Wednesday contests and one Thursday game at Children’s Mercy Park.

Sporting’s home slate will once again feature a variety of theme nights and promotions, including the return of Fan Appreciation Night, Retro Night, Local Night and Sporting Salutes. The club will unveil its full promotional schedule on Thursday.

Major League Soccer’s 24th season will see the league grow to 24 clubs with the addition of expansion side FC Cincinnati. As a member of the Western Conference, Sporting will meet each of its 11 conference rivals twice and all 12 Eastern Conference teams once over the course of 2019.

The balanced alignment means Sporting will play host to 17 different opponents at Children’s Mercy Park while playing their 17 away games in 17 different venues.
2019 Home Opponents: Atlanta United FC, Chicago Fire, Colorado Rapids, FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo, LAFC, LA Galaxy, Minnesota United FC, Montreal Impact, New England Revolution, New York Red Bulls, Philadelphia Union, Portland Timbers, Real Salt Lake, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders FC, Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
2019 Away Opponents: FC Cincinnati, Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew SC, FC Dallas, D.C. United, Houston Dynamo, LAFC, LA Galaxy, Minnesota United FC, New York City FC, Orlando City SC, Portland Timbers, Real Salt Lake, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders FC, Toronto FC, Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Every Sporting KC regular season game will be televised live in 2019. FOX Sports Kansas City will serve as the club’s television home for the third straight year with play-by-play announcer Nate Bukaty, color commentator Matt Lawrence and sideline reporter Carter Augustine on the call.

All regional telecasts will again stream live on FOXSportsGO.com or the FOX Sports GO app, featuring 30 minutes of supplementary coverage both before kickoff and after the final whistle. FOX Sports Kansas City programming is also available on several live streaming TV services such as Sling TV, YouTube TV, Hulu with Live TV and FuboTV.

Sporting is slated to make nine national television appearances this year – three on ESPN and six on FS1 as Major League Soccer enters the fifth year of its broadcast partnership with ESPN and FOX Sports.

The ESPN lineup includes Sporting’s inaugural meeting at FC Cincinnati on April 7 and a Heineken Rivalry Week showdown with Minnesota United FC on Aug. 22 at Children’s Mercy Park.

FS1 will air three high-profile home games this spring as Sporting welcomes reigning Supporters’ Shield winner New York Red Bulls on April 14, defending MLS Cup champion Atlanta United FC on May 5 and Seattle Sounders FC on May 26. FS1 will also televise Sporting’s first visit to Audi Field against D.C. United on May 12.

Sporting will have just one weekend off between the start of the season and the Concacaf Gold Cup break in June, observing FIFA’s international break after visiting the Colorado Rapids on March 17.

The club will play host to eight of its first 13 regular season matches during this time, rounded out by a three-game homestand in May as Vancouver (May 18), Seattle (May 26) and the LA Galaxy (May 29) come to Children’s Mercy Park.

A daunting month of June will require Sporting to navigate a four-game road swing, with two away matches on either end of the Concacaf Gold Cup break. The team visits Houston on June 1 and 2017 MLS Cup champion Toronto FC on June 7 before a trek to Columbus on June 23 and a rivalry renewal at Real Salt Lake six days later.

Sporting enters the heart of summer with a home tilt against LAFC on July 3 prior to playing host to Chicago (July 6) and Dallas (July 20) on either side of a trip to Vancouver (July 13). The club will then visit both coasts on consecutive weekends, playing New York City FC in Yankee Stadium on July 26 and traveling to Seattle on Aug. 4.

Sporting will play four of five games at home between Aug. 10-31-including matchups against rivals RSL, Minnesota and Houston-but will hit the road for four of their last six.

The final month of the regular season is highlighted by a Western Conference Championship rematch at Portland on Sept. 7, a trip to LA Galaxy on Sept. 15 and the Timbers’ return to Children’s Mercy Park on Sept. 29 in Sporting’s home finale.

The 2019 regular season concludes with Decision Day on Oct. 6 when Sporting travels to FC Dallas in one of 12 MLS matches that will begin simultaneously at 3 p.m. The Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs will then begin Oct. 19-20 and culminate with MLS Cup 2019 on Nov. 10, with the top seven teams in each conference securing postseason berths.

Beyond the MLS regular season, Sporting will contend for cup titles on the domestic and international stage. Vermes’ men will open the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League in the Round of 16, hosting Deportivo Toluca FC in the first leg on Feb. 21 before traveling to Central Mexico for the decisive second leg on Feb. 28.

Sporting will also aim to win their fourth Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in eight seasons, having hoisted the trophy in 2012, 2015 and 2017. MLS participants are slated to enter the 2019 U.S. Open Cup in June.

Sporting will visit Scottsdale, Arizona, for both legs of the 2019 preseason, presented by Children’s Mercy. The first phase will take place Jan. 13-31 and the second phase will run from Feb. 6-19, ending two days before their Concacaf Champions League curtain raiser versus Toluca. Sporting will announce their full preseason schedule in the coming days.
