KCKCC rivals JCCC, Highland No. 1 and 2 in women’s top 20 rankings

If Kansas City Kansas Community College is to win the Jayhawk Conference championship, the Lady Blue Devils will have to defeat the top teams in the nation.

Johnson County Community College (12-0) is ranked No. 1 and Highland (7-0) No. 2 in the latest NJCAA Division II national poll.

KCKCC, the only team to defeat No. 11 St. Louis Community College, is ranked No. 6 in the new poll. However, voting was concluded before the Blue Devils (10-2) suffered their second loss of the season 76-74 at Washburn JV Monday night. A fourth Jayhawk team is ranked in the Top 20. Fort Scott (10-1) is ranked 14th.

In the NJCAA poll of Division II men’s teams, Highland (11-0) is ranked No. 3 and Johnson County (9-2) is 14th.

The KCKCC women return to action Friday and Saturday when they’ll compete in the Southeast Nebraska Classic in Beatrice. The Blue Devils will play Central Nebraska Friday at 2 p.m. and host Southeast Saturday at 6 p.m. before returning home for their final two pre-holiday contests.

The Blue Devils will get a chance to avenge their first loss of the season Tuesday when they host Metropolitan Community College (formerly Penn Valley) at 6 p.m. and then will entertain Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) in another re-match Friday at 7 p.m.

The KCKCC men will also close out pre-holiday play at home. At State Fair Saturday at 8 p.m., the Blue Devils will play host to Washburn junior varsity Monday at 7 p.m. and Iowa Western Saturday, Dec. 15, at 4 p.m.

BPU to meet today

The Board of Public Utilities is scheduled to meet Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the administration offices, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas.

On the agenda for the special session at 5 p.m. will be a closed executive session.

On the agenda for the regular meeting at 6 p.m. will be a visitors’ time, year-end recap, October financial report, board comments and general manager comments.

Today started with a wind chill reading of 19 and the temperature at 8 a.m. was 27, according to the National Weather Service. It will warm up to about 47 today.

A quick-moving winter storm system will bring a dusting to a couple tenths of an inch of snow Thursday morning, according to the weather service.

Rain and snow could begin at 2 a.m. Thursday, then continue on Thursday morning, the weather service said. There is a 30 percent chance of precipitation in Wyandotte County.

Wind chills the morning of Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be rather cold, the weather service said. Thursday’s high temperature will drop about 16 degrees from the previous day, hitting a top of 31.

This weekend, a potent storm system will cross the southern plains, according to the weather service. Forecast models continue to keep this system well south of the area. But, forecasters will need to keep a watch on this one in case it shifts north a little.

Today, it will be sunny with a high near 47 and a south southwest wind of 6 to 8 mph, the weather service said.

Tonight, there is a 20 percent chance of rain and snow showers between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., followed by a slight chance of snow showers after 4 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 30, with a south wind of 7 to 9 becoming north northwest after midnight.

Thursday, there is a 30 percent chance of snow showers before noon, the weather service said. It will become mostly sunny, with a high near 31 and a north wind of 7 to 10 mph.

Thursday night, it will be mostly cloudy with a low of 17 and a north northeast wind of 5 to 7 mph, according to the weather service.

Friday, it will be partly sunny with a high near 31 with an east northeast wind of 6 mph, the weather service said.

Friday night, it will be mostly cloudy with a low of 20, according to the weather service.

Saturday, the high will be near 32 with mostly cloudy skies, the weather service said.

Saturday night, the low will be around 19 with mostly cloudy skies, according to the weather service.
