Offices to be closed Dec. 25

The administrative offices and customer service lobby of the Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Public Utilities will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 25, and also on Tuesday, Jan. 1.

Also closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 will be the Unified Government offices.

BPU will have emergency service available seven days a week. For power emergencies, customers may call 913-573-9522. For water emergencies, call 913-573-9622 from 8 a.m. to midnight on weekdays and 913-573-8522 from midnight to 8 a.m. and during weekends and holidays.

There will be no trash or recycling collection on Christmas Day, Tuesday, Dec. 25, because of the Christmas holiday. Pickup will resume one day later.

For the rest of the week, Tuesday trash collection will be on Wednesday; Wednesday collection will be on Thursday; Thursday collection will be on Friday; and Friday collection will be on Saturday.

Dec. 24 and Dec. 25 also are state and federal holidays. Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, and Christmas Day, Dec. 25, are holidays for the state of Kansas and also for federal workers.

Tuesday, Dec. 25, is a holiday for the U.S. Postal Service.

House sustains extensive damage in fire

A fire at 2:06 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, a 648 Oakland Ave. caused extensive damage to a three-story house.

According to a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department, a person reported seeing flames coming from the three-story single-family residence.

When they arrived, fire crews found the fire on the second floor and also coming out of the third floor, according to the spokesman.

An additional pumper was called because of exposure. In all, seven fire suppression units, four Emergency Medical Services units, two chief officers and the fire investigator responded.

Because the third floor was missing in areas, all crews evacuated and switched to an exterior attack, the spokesman stated. There were no injuries to residents or firefighters.

The estimated dollar loss was $40,000 to the property and $120,000 to the contents, according to the spokesman.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and is under investigation, the spokesman stated.

Winter officially begins today, but one wouldn’t know it from the predicted high temperature.

Today’s high will be near 45, according to the National Weather Service, with warm temperatures expected to continue well into next week.

Snow is a possibility on Christmas Eve, according to the forecasters.

Rain chances will return to the area by Wednesday morning, with increasing chances for precipitation expected heading into Thursday, the weather service said.

Activity should taper off by early Friday, according to the weather service. No hazardous weather is expected.

Today, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 45, and a north northwest wind of 5 to 7 mph becoming light and variable in the afternoon, according to the weather service.

Tonight, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 32 and a south wind of 3 to 8 mph, according to the weather service.

Saturday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 48 and a southwest wind of 7 to 9 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon, the weather service said.

Saturday night, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 29 and a west northwest wind of around 6 mph, according to the weather service.

Sunday, it will be sunny with a high near 48 and a west wind of 6 to 8 mph, the weather service said.

Sunday night, it will be partly cloudy with a low of 32, according to the weather service.

On Monday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 51, the weather service said.

Monday night, Christmas Eve, there is a 30 percent chance of rain before 2 a.m., then a chance of rain and snow between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., then a chance of snow after 4 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 34.

On Tuesday, Christmas Day, it will be partly sunny with a high near 51, the weather service said.

Tuesday night, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 37, according to the weather service.

Wednesday, there is a 70 percent chance of rain, with a high near 48, the weather service said.
