Police investigate homicide in 3100 block of Mellier

Kansas City, Kansas, police are investigating a homicide in the 3100 block of Mellier Avenue.

Officers responded about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, to the location on reports of a shooting, a police spokesman stated.

Officers located a victim, a man in his 30s, who had been shot, the spokesman stated. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Mellier Avenue is between Parallel Parkway and Brown Avenue.

The incident is under investigation by the police department’s Major Case Unit. Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

The eighth annual Unity Fest, a fundraiser for Our Lady of Unity parish, Sacred Heart and St. John the Evangelist Catholic churches, will take place from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Sacred Heart field, 2646 S. 34th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The family event will include a kids area with carnival games, crafts and inflatables. All-day entertainment will include different musical groups, Mariachi groups and Folkloric dance groups. A silent auction will be held in the church hall, and a mini-soccer tournament is planned for all age groups.

Volunteers are needed for Samaritan’s Purse’s project, Operation Christmas Child. In this program, led by the Rev. Franklin Graham, volunteers fill shoeboxes with toys, school supplies and hygiene items. The shoeboxes are given to needy children. Operation Christmas Child has delivered more than 157 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 160 countries since 1993. This year, the local Kansas City, Kansas West Area Team hopes to collect 15,782 shoebox gifts to contribute to the 2018 global goal of reaching more than 11 million children in need. Renaissance Festival opens
The Kansas City Renaissance Festival opened on Saturday, Sept. 1, and continues on weekends through Oct. 14 at the festival grounds at 130th and State Avenue, Bonner Springs. It also will be open on Labor Day and Columbus Day. The festival is a celebration of medieval life, with such activities as jousting, contests, a royal parade, music, entertainment and food. The guest speaker at the Bonner Springs Historic Preservation Society’s monthly speaker series Sept. 13 will be Fred Kipp, author of “The Last Yankee Dodger: From Brooklyn to LA and the Bronx.” Kipp, 86, who was born in Piqua, Kansas, is the last living player for the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees. A book discussion of Willa Cather’s “Song of the Lark” is scheduled at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the Bonner Springs Library. Linda Lewis, a retired professor from Bethany College, will facilitate the discussion. Lewis was a professor of English for 27 years at Bethany College and is an expert in British literature. She also has taught courses about Cather previously. Like Cather, Lewis is from Nebraska. Lewis moved to Kansas upon completing her doctorate degree at the University of Nebraska. Open mic event planned
The Bonner Springs Arts Alliance Wordslingers, a writing group that meets at 6:30 p.m. every second Monday at the Bonner Springs Library, will hold a monthly open mic for writers at Third Space Coffee. A program is planned Oct. 16 at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library on immigration legislation.
