Late goal foils KCKCC women’s first win over Johnson County

Just five minutes and 46 seconds separated Kansas City Kansas Community College and its first-ever women’s soccer win over Johnson County Tuesday.

As it was, the Lady Blue Devils and Cavaliers battled through two 10-minutes overtimes in a 2-2 deadlock. The tie left KCKCC at 1-1-2 heading into another Jayhawk Conference clash at Allen County Saturday at 2 p.m. with a men’s game to follow at 4 p.m.

KCKCC twice led JCCC Tuesday. An unassisted goal from the left hash mark by freshman Cristina Alvarez gave KCKCC a 1-0 lead at the 36:47 mark of the first half only to have JCCC sophomore Manuela Gonzalez tie it on a perfectly placed kick from 20 yards that sailed just under the cross bar at the 17:39 mark.

The Lady Blue Devils then went ahead 2-1 in the opening two minutes of the second half, Shawnee Heights sophomore Jessica Hill slipping between two defenders to knock in a well-placed corner kick by DeSoto sophomore Carmen Rush.

For the next 38 minutes, freshman goalkeeper Alee Alter and a corps of defenders turned away kick after kick only to have the Cavaliers’ Megan Nugent tie it with a kick just inside the box with 5:46 left.

“We had two very good opportunities in overtime but Johnson County’s goalkeeper made a good play on one and their defenders turned away the other one,” KCKCC coach Shawn Uhlenhake said.

The first head coach to play JCCC’s women to a tie, Uhlenhake was ecstatic about the play of his defense.

“The defense was great,” he said. “It was under pressure for the majority of the game. JCCC took a lot of shots but all of the shots were pretty much pressured by our defense. And Alee Alter did a great job in goal making sure all their shots were secured.”

Alee was credited with eight saves and it would have been more had not Blue Devil defenders Madison Plake, Sydney Guerra, Alex Schemmel, Micayla Nemnich and Carmen Rush turned away JCCC attackers – an exceptional performance considering the game was played in 90-degree heat.

“We’re playing at lot of freshmen and they played hard to give us a chance to win,” Uhlenhake said. “Once they learn how to play the game this team could be dangerous.”

Weather protection plan in effect for Speedway races

A ticket and travel protection program with the International Speedway Corp. Weather Protection Program and TicketGuardian is being implemented for races at NASCAR events.

The weather protection program applies to paid grandstand tickets to NASCAR races at any ISC facility that are postponed and rescheduled to a different date due to inclement weather. Guests will be able to exchange paid grandstand tickets that were not used on a rescheduled race date for a future NASCAR event at an ISC facility, according to an announcement today from ISC.

The unused tickets may be exchanged for a same-series ticket of equal or lesser value based on event and seating location availability.

Guests with an unused grandstand ticket will have 60 days to contact the ticket office at the ISC facility where the event was postponed, according to the news release. Eligible grandstand tickets may be exchanged for any future NASCAR race at an ISC facility within one year of the original event date or for the same race the following year, excluding the Daytona 500. Customers who have tickets to a postponed Daytona 500 event may exchange their tickets for a future Daytona 500 event; however, tickets from other Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series events may not be exchanged for a Daytona 500 ticket.

In situations that keep fans from attending the races, TicketGuardian’s FanShield insurance technology will continue to provide fans a feeling of security when buying tickets in advance. With low-cost coverage, fans are protected from the burden of having to resell their ticket or losing their money altogether if they’re unable to attend the event. Customers instead can receive a refund despite the traditional status quo of events, tickets, and registrations being non-refundable.

Fans that attend NASCAR events at ISC facilities will now enjoy comprehensive coverage when planning and attending events.

KCKCC ties for fourth in tough Evangel fall golf invitational

Despite being one man down, Kansas City Kansas Community College still came home with a tie for fourth place in the tough Evangel Fall Invitational Tuesday.

The lone two-year college in the 11-team tournament, KCKCC tied for fourth with host Evangel in the 36-hole tournament played at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Missouri.

“Tough golf course and the toughest field we’ve faced,” said KCKCC coach Gary Shrader, who had only four players because sophomore Evin Wheaton of Immaculata suffered dizziness and had to withdraw.”

Sophomore Zach Miller of Greeley led the Blue Devils, tying for 10th at 77-76-153, with freshman Garrett Scott of Sabetha deadlocked for 16th at 77-79-156. Olathe Northwest sophomore Harry Welsh (82-77-159) finished 26th and Liberal freshman Cameron Riley (85-82-167) 43rd.

So strong was the tournament that a member of Baker’s “B” team, Max Rogers, shared medalist honors with three others at an even par 73-71-144.

With four players in the top nine finishers, Missouri Valley took team honors at 586 with Park University edging. Culver-Stockton 606-609 for second. KCKCC and Evangel shared fourth at 635 followed by Williams Baptist, 639; Missouri Valley “B,” 640; Southwestern and Baker, 644; College of the Ozarks, 660; and Baker “B,” 663.

KCKCC resumes action next Monday and Tuesday when the Blue Devils face several of the same teams in the Missouri Valley Invitational in Marshall.
