Plans are underway for the annual Wyandotte County Fair, to be held Tuesday, July 10, through Saturday, July 14.

This year’s fair will include carnival rides, a petting zoo, a mud run, go-kart races, musical entertainment, refreshments, and animal exhibits, said Wanda Schmieding, secretary of the Wyandotte County Fair Board.

If there is a “don’t miss” aspect of the fair this year, for her it would be the food and the animals.

“There’s always something interesting, fried doughnuts or funnel cakes,” Schmieding said.

Among the several new vendors will be one with small fried doughnuts, she said. Other refreshments available for purchase will include shaved ice, barbecue sandwiches, lemonade and many other food products.

“Then the animals are next on my list,” she said. “It’s always fun to see the kids and animals.”

There will be 4-H member animal exhibits, as well as a petting zoo, camel rides and pig races at the fair this year, Schmieding said.

There are animal shows and judging scheduled throughout the week, with a livestock auction at 7 p.m. Friday, preceded by the bucket calf parade. There will be new lights added to the new barn for the livestock sale.

Besides 4-H exhibits, there are also open exhibits in several categories at the fair.

Go-kart races will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the go-kart track, she said. There is no cost to attend.

Saturday night will feature a mud run at 7 p.m., with a paid admission to the arena, Schmieding said.

Free musical entertainment will take place each night on the free stage under the tent, she said.

The Reyes Brothers Band will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the free tent, Schmieding said.

Backroad Express will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday on the free stage, and the Reyes Jr. Band will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday on the free stage, she said.

On Friday, the Sully Brothers will perform at 7 p.m., and Saturday will be Alan Thorne Gospel Night at 7 p.m. on the free stage, she added.

Another favorite at the annual county fair is the magic show in the big Red Barn. The show is free and there are two shows scheduled each evening, she said.

Senior Citizens Day will begin at 11:30 a.m. Friday, July 13, at the fair, in the free tent area, she said.

The carnival will have wristband nights each night of the fair. On Tuesday, the cost of wristband night will be $15, compared to $25 on the other nights.

There will be some free military displays and vehicles, and a bounce house, she said. The Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department will have a display for people to tour.

Four special open contests will be held at the fair this year. An 8-inch fruit pie contest, with entries received from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 14, at the Red Barn, will offer prizes of $100 for first place, $75 for second place and $25 for third place.

Another contest is for items made out of recycled material. The size of the item is 20 by 15. Entries will be received from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday, July 9, at the Red Barn. Prizes are $25 for first place, $15 for second and $10 for third.

A Legos contest, for those who are ages 1 to 12, will accept entries from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday, July 9, at the Red Barn. Items built with Legos are not to exceed 20 by 15. Prizes are $15 for first place, $10 for second place and $5 for third place.

Then, there is a prize for the best-looking plate of five homegrown tomatoes. The tomatoes can be any variety. Entries will be accepted from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, at the Red Barn. Prizes are $25, $15 and $10. The contest is sponsored by Torrey Maintenance.

Schmieding said she is hoping for a turnout of 30,000 to 40,000 at the fair this year, and a lot will depend on the weather.

While there isn’t air-conditioning available at the fair, there might occasionally be a shade tree, a breeze, or a fan in the barn, she said.

If it’s hot, individuals may bring in one bottle of water with them, she added, which can be refilled while they are at the fair. Residents should take all the necessary precautions if there is a heat advisory.

Schmieding said the fair will be updating its information regularly on its Facebook page and at its website, wycofair.com. There should be more information there about other events at the fair.

Hours of the fair are 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and noon to 10 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $5 per car. There will be free parking from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The county fair is at 13700 Polfer Road, which is east of K-7 on Polfer Road, in Kansas City, Kansas.

T-Bones reach 30 wins under Texas skies

Everything is bigger in Texas, this includes wins. The Kansas City T-Bones (30-16) continued their four-game winning streak beating the Texas Airhogs (11-34) 6-2 Friday night in Texas.

A huge five-run seventh inning gave the T-Bones a Texas-style 30th win.

It took four innings before the T-Bones got a hit, and one more inning before the T-Bones scored a run.

Zhu Jinghao walked Adrian Nieto to start the inning. Dylan Tice stepped up to bat, hitting a single to right field to get on base and then Todd Cunningham came to save the day.

Cunningham had an RBI sending Nieto home and putting the T-Bones on the board 1-0.

The T-Bones started rolling from there. In the top of the seventh, Adrian Nieto, Mason Davis and Dylan Tice loaded the bases before Zach Walters stepped up to bat with two outs and hit an off the wall, base clearing triple, to put the T-Bones up 4-0.

Taylor Featherston hit a high one out to left-field, but left-fielder Dillon Thomas dropped the ball allowing Featherston to get on base. Keith Curcio’s RBI single that followed sent Walters home extending the lead 5-0. A wild pitch sent Taylor Featherston home making the lead 6-0.

Texas got tired of the T-Bones getting all the runs and ended a 13-inning scoreless streak by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Kevin Hill walked Chen Chen to start the seventh, and then Yang Jin hit a single to get on base.

Hill walked Casio Grider and found himself in a bases loaded situation. Dillion Thomas sent Chen and Jin home with a single making the score 6-2.

Hunter Adkins (2-2) was the winning pitcher. He started the game for the T-Bones and pitched six scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Adkins finished the night with a quality start. He was replaced by Kevin Hill at the start of the seventh inning. Adkins finished the game with zero runs and six hits in six innings.

Hill pitched one inning with two hits and two runs before Nick Lee took over to pitch a scoreless eighth inning and new T-Bone Marcus Crescentini finished the ninth.

Texas’ Zhu Jinghao (0-3) was the losing pitcher. He finished the game with three hits and one run in five innings.

Li Yu took over and pitched one inning without any hits or runs. Qi Xin took over in the seventh allowing four hits and five runs in one inning. Ran Song allowed one hit in the eighth before Cui Enting closed the game for the Airhogs.

Kansas City looks to extend their winning streak Saturday to six games against the Airhogs at Airhogs Stadium The first pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

Individual tickets, season, group, mini-plans and nightly party suites are on sale and can be purchased by visiting the box office at T-Bones Stadium or www.tbonesbaseball.com. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Toronto visits Sporting KC tonight in KCK

With a two-game road trip in the books, Sporting Kansas City (9-4-5, 32 points) returns to the friendly confines of Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday to meet reigning MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield champion Toronto FC.

FOX Sports Kansas City and FOX Sports Midwest Plus will air three hours of live coverage beginning at 7 p.m., while listeners can catch the action on Sports Radio 810 WHB (English) and ESPN Deportes KC 1480 AM (Spanish).

The game will also stream live on FOX Sports GO in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa and on ESPN+ elsewhere across the U.S. A limited number of tickets for Saturday’s showdown are available via SeatGeek.com , and all fans in attendance will be treated to a fireworks show 15 minutes after the final whistle.

Both teams will be looking to snap losing streaks when they take the field on Saturday.

Sporting KC has dropped two straight since defeating the Houston Dynamo 3-2 on June 23, while Toronto FC has lost three consecutive league games for the first time since September 2015.

The Fourth of July was nothing to celebrate for either team. Toronto FC took a 4-3 loss at Minnesota United FC, suffering the ill effects of Darwin Quintero’s devastating hat-trick.

The Reds now sit eight points below the playoff line in the East, and to complicate matters, striker Jozy Altidore, midfielder Victor Vazquez and defender Drew Moor – veterans who played influential roles during their treble-winning 2017 campaign – will miss Saturday through injury.

Sporting KC, meanwhile, has lost back-to-back games for the first time since May 2017. A 4-2 defeat to Real Salt Lake on Wednesday was further soured by red cards issued to Daniel Salloi and Roger Espinoza.

The club had held first place in the Western Conference since mid-March but enters the weekend three points behind FC Dallas and five points behind Supporters’ Shield leaders Atlanta United FC.

In 2017, Toronto FC became the first MLS club to win a treble by lifting the MLS Cup, Supporters’ Shield and Canadian Championship.

They finished with an MLS regular-season record 69 points to go with 20 wins (most all-time in the non-shootout era) and 74 goals (second-most all-time).

Fortunes have reversed in 2018, however, as the Reds already have twice as many MLS defeats as they did last season. A slew of injuries and the lingering hangover of a heartbreaking loss to Chivas de Guadalajara in the 2018 Concacaf Champions League finals in April have put Toronto behind the proverbial eight-ball heading into July.

Sporting KC will have some attacking boots to fill on Saturday with their leading goal scorer and top assist man suspended.

Salloi has bagged a team-best seven goals while Espinoza has an MLS career-high eight assists.

On the opposite sideline, Italian talisman Sebastian Giovinco (four goals, seven assists) remains a man to watch with 59 goals and 44 assists across 100 MLS regular season appearances.

The head-to-head series has belonged to Sporting KC, and decisively so. Kansas City owns a 14-4-6 record against the Reds, including a 9-1-2 mark at home.

Vermes’ men are 11-1-3 in the last 15 meetings and 6-0-2 in the last eight. Additionally, Toronto has never won at Children’s Mercy Park (0-6-1) and their 14 regular-season losses to Sporting KC are their most against any MLS foe.

Both sides carry a handful of injury concerns into Saturday’s contest. The hosts will continue to be without Felipe Gutierrez (hernia), Gianluca Busio (hamstring), Cristian Lobato (knee) and Jimmy Medranda (knee), while Toronto head coach Greg Vanney will have seven absences to account for in Altidore, Vazquez, Moor, Auro, Jason Hernandez, Chris Mavinga and Caleb Patterson-Sewell.
