Threat of severe storms much lower tonight, according to weather service

While there is a chance for potentially severe thunderstorms tonight in eastern Kansas, the National Weather Service’s new forecast says the threat is much lower than Wednesday’s severe weather event.

The weather service has changed the forecast for severe threat probabilities in Wyandotte County after 5 p.m. tonight to a 15 percent probability of severe winds, a 2 percent probability of tornados and a 15 percent probability of severe hail.

While the threat is lower than earlier predicted, the threat of severe weather still exists.

Today’s high will be near 18, with a south wind of 13 to 18 mph, gusting as high as 33 mph, the weather service said.

Tonight, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in Wyandotte County, mainly before 11 p.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 56. Between a tenth and quarter-inch of rain is possible.

Update: Fatal shooting involved a narcotics case

The fatal shooting just after 5 p.m. May 2 in the 2400 block of Wood Avenue involved a narcotics investigation by the Violent Crimes Task Force, according to a Kansas City, Kansas, police spokesman.

Officers were trying to make an arrest when they were confronted by an armed suspect, the spokesman stated. During the confrontation the suspect, a man in his mid-20s, was shot and killed, the spokesman stated.

The officer involved is a 21-year veteran of the Police Department, and has been placed on administrative leave, according to the spokesman.

An investigation is being conducted by the major case unit of the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department and will be reviewed by the Officer Involved Critical Incident Team, the spokesman stated.
