Meeting asks residents for opinions about future of Main Library
A meeting planned from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 7, will ask residents to share their opinions on the future of the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave. The meeting is in the second floor auditorium at the Main Library. Leavenworth Road Association to meet May 8
The Leavenworth Road Association will meet Tuesday, May 8, at the Eisenhower Recreation Center, 2901 N. 72nd St., Kansas City, Kansas. The Grinter Jamboree is planned at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, at the Grinter barn, 1400 S. 78th St. The band MP3 will perform a tribute to George Jones and Tammy Wynette. Admission is $5 per person. Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase.
Program planned on May 8 on immigrants and refugees in the community
“They Are Our Neighbors: Immigrants and Refugees in Our Community” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, in the Main Kansas City, Kansas Public Library, second floor auditorium, 625 Minnesota Ave. The program may discuss the difference between an immigrant and a refugee, what it means to have a green card and be a permanent resident versus a citizen, how many immigrants and refugees are living in the city, where they come from and why, do they have to pay taxes, how the community can help to welcome and integrate them. There will be stories from immigrants and refugees who settled in the Kansas City area.
BPU to meet May 9
The Board of Public Utilities will meet Wednesday, May 9, at the BPU administration building, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Education will meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 10, at the J.E. Dunn Logistic Center, 240 S. 65th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Residents are invited to a program on soil mapping information at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 10, at the Sunflower Room, Wyandotte County Extension Office, 1208 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The Soil Conservation Service in Wyandotte County offers soil mapping services, as well as soil erosion, pollution and storm water management. Those attending the presentation May 10 by Lonnie Miller, soil scientist, will find out how they can use the soil mapping information as it pertains to their own property. Shepherd’s Center to hold Book and Brick-A-Brac sale May 11 and 12
The Shepherd’s Center of KCK will hold its 24th annual Book and Bric-A-Brac sale on Friday and Saturday, May 11 and 12, at the First Baptist Church of Turner, 701 S. 55th, Kansas City, Kansas. Donations of books and other sale items will be accepted at the church beginning 8 a.m. Thursday, May 10. Possible sale items include household items, dishes, decorations, towels, and holiday items. Clothing donations will not be accepted. In addition, church members will hold a $5 breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 12. Proceeds from the sale benefit the programs and services of the Shepherd’s Center of KCK, and proceeds from the breakfast will help the church provide summer camp fees for a young person. Youth Policy Debate to be May 12
The WyCo Youth Policy Debate will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at Kansas City Kansas Community College, Upper Jewell building, 7250 State Ave. Sponsored annually by State Sen. David Haley, D-4th Dist., the annual debate is open to students attending Harmon, Schlagle, Washington and Wyandotte high schools, Sumner Academy and College Gateway program. It is the seventh annual event. Sen. Haley started the event in 2012 as a way to encourage political awareness and active citizenry in Wyandotte County youth. In the event, young adults will have an opportunity to think on their feet and be heard by a community audience about current events.
