T-Bones win one in Wichita

Wet weather delayed the start of Sunday’s game between the Kansas City T-Bones and the Wichita Wingnuts at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium an hour.

The T-Bones also put a damper on the Wingnuts hope for a sweep of the three-game series, beating Wichita 3-1 with a ninth inning rally that saw two runs score on a double by Angel Rosa.

The game started with two and a half scoreless innings, when Wichita put the first run on the board in the bottom of the third. Leo Vargas hit a single to right field single and stole second. An RBI single by Logan Watkins that dropped into left field brought Vargas home, making the score 1-0 Wichita.

The T-Bones waited until the top of the fifth inning for their first hit of the game. Cal Towey smashed the ball into right field past a diving Wichita second baseman, putting him on first base.

Towey’s hit was followed by an RBI double from Jordan Edgerton. The highly hit ball toward right center field, bounced off the tip of the glove of Wichita’s Zach Nehrir allowing Towey to score from first, but Edgerton was tagged out after a run-down between second and third. The run tied the ball game 1-1.

In the top of the ninth, Towey singled again for Kansas City. Tucker Pennell reached on an infield singled, advancing Towey to second. Angel Rosa then followed with an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Towey and Pennell breaking the tie and putting the T-Bones up 3-1.

The game ended with a dramatic bottom of the ninth inning. Wichita loaded the bases and looked poised to threaten the T-Bones lead. Tony Thomas was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single to left field by the next batter Zach Nehrir.

John Nester landed a base on balls, advancing the runners and loading the bases with only one out. But Winiarski came through in the clutch, striking out the final two Wichita batters, Logan Trowbridge and Isaiah Aluko, to end the game.

T-Bones starter Cody Dickson went three innings, followed by relief pitching from Julio Eusebio, Sam Street, Francisco Gracesqui and Winiarski. Gracesqui (1-0) picked up the win and Winiarski (1) the save. Daniel Tillman (0-1) got the loss for Wichita. Kansas City scored three runs on eight hits with one error, and Wichita scored one run on seven hits with one error.
