Bishop Ward baseball state runners-up

The Bishop Ward baseball team lost in the final round of the KSHSAA 4A Division 2 tournament to Iola, 11-6, bringing home a trophy that wasn’t the one they wanted, but that nearly every other team in Kansas would envy. The game was played at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina.

Ward got in a hole early when the Mustangs put up 6 runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Cyclones battled back in the third to pull within 1 run at 6-5. Senior Mikal Whisler’s 3-RBI triple was the key hit in the inning.

Iola extended its lead with 3 more runs in the bottom of the third inning, and although Ward scored again in the fourth, the Cyclones weren’t able to muster another comeback.

Ward finished the regular season 13-7, winning the Kaw Valley League title in their first year under head coach Matt Carpenter.

At the state tournament, Bishop Ward defeated Rock Creek High School of St. George, Kan., in the quarterfinals on Thursday, and then defeated Parsons High School in the semifinals earlier Friday.

Bonner Springs Farmers’ Market continues
The Bonner Springs Farmers’ Market will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 26, at Kelly Murphy Park, 129 Elm, Bonner Springs. The farmers’ market is planned on Saturday mornings during the rest of the summer, through Oct. 27. For more information, see http://bonnerlibrary.org/.

Family story time planned
Family story time will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. May 26 at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, craft room, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The story time is for children 2 to 6 years old. There will be stories, dancing and singing.

Spanish singing lessons planned
Spanish singing lessons are planned from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 26, at the South Branch Library, Conference Room B, 3104 Strong Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The event is for children. Sandra Zamora will lead the program.

Program topic to be money
A children’s and teens’ program about money is planned from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 26, at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The program is being presented by the Federal Reserve Money Museum. The program is for those who are younger than 18 years old.

Children’s craft offered
Children and teens will make tie-dye picture frames from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 26, at the craft room at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kansas.

Driver in critical condition after accident at 110th and Village West Parkway

A driver of a pickup truck is in critical condition after an accident near 110th and Village West Parkway in Kansas City, Kansas, according to a police spokesman.

Police responded about 4:08 p.m. May 25 to the accident and found a red pickup truck and white sport utility vehicle.

An initial investigation showed the truck was traveling westbound on Village West Parkway when it left the roadway, drove between two buildings and struck a parked vehicle, the police spokesman stated.

The driver of the red truck was taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to police.

The cause and circumstances of the accident are under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s Traffic Support Unit. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact investigators at 913-596-3000.
