BPU to meet Wednesday, April 18
The Board of Public Utilities will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at the BPU offices, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Quindaro Symposium planned April 19-21
A symposium April 19-21 will be about Quindaro, its history and abolitionist politics. The Freedom’s Frontier symposium will be at two sites. It is part of the process of designating the Quindaro ruins as a national historic landmark. Local author to sign books April 19
Local author Brendan Mathia will hold a book signing for his new book, “Vanish,” at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton, Bonner Springs. The author is a recent graduate of Bonner Springs High School who was on the cusp of going to college but wanted to finish his novel first. He will speak about the book. Author to discuss book about food, herbicide and health
Author Carey Gillam will talk about her nonfiction book, food and farming, during a meeting of the Agri-Culture Book Club at 2 p.m. Friday, April 20, at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame, 630 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs. Candidates scheduled to speak at Democratic breakfast
Three Democratic candidates for governor, State Sen. Laura Kelly, Dr. Arden Andersen and State Rep. Jim Ward, are scheduled to speak April 21 at the Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast. The buffet will open at 8:15 a.m. April 21 at Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Reservations are requested to [email protected] by Friday, April 20, for those who plan to attend. The buffet will cost $10 a person; $6 for students and those on limited incomes. Those who attend do not have to purchase a breakfast. Those who require special needs are asked to state it in their reservations. The program is open to all Democrats. All Democratic candidates may distribute campaign literature and signs before and after the program. Other Democratic candidates for governor are scheduled to speak in May.

Central Avenue cleanup scheduled April 21
The Central Avenue Betterment Association is sponsoring an Earth Day celebration cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 21. After a light breakfast at 9 a.m. there will be a cleanup immediately afterward. Volunteers will have lunch at noon at 1621 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Barnyard Babies to be April 21 at Ag Hall
Barnyard Babies, featuring young farm animals, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame, 126th and State, Bonner Springs. The event will feature life on a farm, a tractor petting zoo, fresh produce, kiddie pedal pull contests and giant balloon animals. There will be live musical entertainment. A clown school workshop is planned from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton, Bonner Springs. KCKCC awards and scholarship event planned April 21
The Mid-America Education Hall of Fame Awards and Scholarship Event will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Thomas R. Burke Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The annual event is the signature initiative of the Kansas City Kansas Community College Foundation, raising over $100,000 in 2017 to support student scholarships. Career fair planned April 25 at KCKCC
A career fair is planned on Wednesday, April 25, at Kansas City Kansas Community College, fieldhouse, 7250 State Ave. Veterans may attend from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and students and the public may attend from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Several employers are scheduled to attend. Public comment session scheduled on Donnelly nursing program
The Kansas State Board of Nursing will hold a public comment session on April 26 about the Donnelly College Nursing program as part of a periodic review. The session is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. April 26 in the Donnelly College Event Center, 608 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

UG Commission to meet April 26
The Unified Government Commission has scheduled a meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at the Commission Chambers, lobby level, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Comedy show planned to raise funds for homeless program in KCK schools
Leadership 2000 will present a Night of Comedy to raise funds for the homeless program at the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools. The comedy show will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at the Improv Comedy Theatre, Zona Rosa, 7250 N.W. 87th St., Kansas City, Missouri. Local comedians B-RICH, Conrad Courtney, Rod Reyes and Andrea Caspari will perform in this benefit event. In addition, there will be a silent auction for sports memorabilia from the Kansas City Chiefs, the Kansas City Royals, University of Kansas and other groups. The cost of admission is $20 and additional donations are accepted. All of the proceeds from ticket sales, donations and a portion of food and drink purchases will directly benefit the students and families of the McKinney-Vento program. Grinter Quilt Show to be April 27-28
The Grinter Quilters plan the 42nd annual quilt show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 27 and 28 at Grinter Place, 1400 S. 78th St., Kansas City, Kansas. On April 28, Teresa Ward, who does long-arm quilting, will give a presentation and trunk show at 1 p.m. Anyone who wishes to show a quilt may bring it to Grinter on Tuesday, April 24. Bonner Springs Library plans event for young children
The eighth annual Books, Blocks and Bubbles event for young children is from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 28, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs. Those attending the event will get to see exhibits and information about dinosaurs from Science City, Prairie Fire and the University of Kansas Department of Paleontology. There also will be a dinosaur storytime, and children will take home a free book. The event is cosponsored with the Bonner Springs School District Parents as Teachers program. Registration open for Blue Devil 5K and Kids Trot May 5
The 2018 Blue Devil 5K and Kids Trot will be May 5 at Kansas City Kansas Community College. The Blue Devil 5K, which is in its 14th year, is at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 5. The course winds through the KCKCC campus on the roads, walking paths and sidewalks. The Kids Trot follows at 9 a.m. and is geared toward children 11-years and younger. Childcare volunteers will provide activities for the children from 7:30 to 9 a.m., so parents can participate in the run-walk. Registration for the 5K is $20 per person through March 31. The Kids Trot is $10. Registration for both the Blue Devil 5K and the Kid’s Trot includes a T-shirt, Finisher’s Medal, Goodie Bag and an all-you-can eat pancake breakfast following the event. About 200 people participated in the 5K and Kids Trot in 2017. Awards will be given to the top overall male and female finishers. In addition, the winner of each age group will receive an award and a prize. Children in the Kids Trot will run in heats based on age groups. Distances will range from 25 meters to one-quarter of a mile. No strollers are allowed. Program planned on May 8 on immigrants and refugees in the community
“They Are Our Neighbors: Immigrants and Refugees in Our Community” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, in the Main Kansas City, Kansas Public Library, second floor auditorium, 625 Minnesota Ave. The program may discuss the difference between an immigrant and a refugee, what it means to have a green card and be a permanent resident versus a citizen, how many immigrants and refugees are living in the city, where they come from and why, do they have to pay taxes, how the community can help to welcome and integrate them. There will be stories from immigrants and refugees who settled in the Kansas City area.

Counseling offered
The Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., is offering individual and couples counseling to women and men who might not otherwise be able to afford counseling. A little rain, a little snow, a little freezing weather here

A mix of light snow and rain was falling around 8:40 p.m. Saturday, April 14, in Wyandotte County. The temperature was reported at 39 degrees.

The forecast from the National Weather Service said light rain, drizzle and light snow are possible tonight. A freeze warning is in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday.

A dusting on lawns is the most snow that is expected, with little to no effect on travel, according to the weather service.

A hard freeze is expected for the Kansas City area, and sensitive outdoor plants should be protected tonight, the weather service said.

The forecast tonight calls for rain and snow showers before 1 a.m., then a chance of snow showers and freezing drizzle between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., then a chance of snow showers after 2 a.m., according to the weather service.

A northwest wind of 13 to 18 mph may gust as high as 26 mph. Little or no ice accumulation is expected, with less than a half-inch of snow accumulation possible tonight.

Sunday, it will be cloudy with a high near 37 and a northwest wind of 18 mph, gusting as high as 28 mph, the weather service said.

Sunday night, the low will be around 27, with a northwest wind of 9 to 15 mph, gusting as high as 23 mph, according to the weather service.

Monday, the forecast calls for sunny skies and a high near 54, with a west northwest wind of 5 to 8 mph, the weather service said.

Ethnic festival pays tribute to community’s diversity
