Swearing-in ceremony for new mayor to be Monday evening

A swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected mayor of Kansas City, Kansas, and for Unified Government commissioners will take place at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at Memorial Hall, 600 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

David Alvey, mayor-elect and CEO, will take the oath of office, along with new Unified Government Commissioner Tom Burroughs, and re-elected Commissioners Mike Kane, Jane Winkler Philbrook, Gayle Townsend and Jim Walters.

The officials won election in November.

One dead, two injured following accident near 34th and State

One person died and another was in critical condition following an accident Sunday in the 3400 block of State Avenue, according to a Kansas City, Kansas, police spokesman.

The accident happened around 4:08 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7.

A black sport utility vehicle and tan pickup truck were involved in the two-vehicle traffic accident, the spokesman stated.

The SUV, with two males inside, was traveling eastbound on State Avenue, turning northbound onto 34th Street, the spokesman stated. The tan pickup truck was westbound on State when it collided with the black SUV, according to the spokesman.

The driver of the SUV died at the scene and the passenger was taken to a hospital in critical condition, the spokesman stated. The sole occupant of the tan pickup truck was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The identity of the victim will not be released until there is positive identification and family notification, according to the police spokesman.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s Traffic Support Unit-Critical Collision Response Team is investigating.

Homicide victim at 10th and Ivandale identified

The victim of a homicide on Jan. 4 at 10th and Ivandale has been identified, a police spokesman stated.

The victim was Gerald W. Walsh, 56, a resident of Kansas City, Kansas, according to police.

Walsh was found inside a pickup truck in the middle of 10th Street. He had been shot, police stated. It was believed the shooting happened near 10th and Montana.

On Jan. 5, Jeremy L. Comstock, 28, was charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping in Wyandotte County, according to the authorities. As of Friday, Comstock was still in custody in Kansas City, Mo., following his arrest after a vehicle pursuit.
