Governor’s final proclamation asks for prayer and fasting today

In his final proclamation, Gov. Sam Brownback is asking Kansans to observe a day of prayer and fasting on Tuesday, Jan. 30, during his final day in office.

Brownback is leaving to become U.S. ambassador at large for international religious freedom.

Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer will be sworn in as governor at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, in the Capitol at Topeka, Kan.

Gov. Brownback’s statement:

“President George Washington, in his 1795 Proclamation for a Day of Public Thanksgiving called on Americans “to acknowledge our many and great obligations to Almighty God and to implore Him to continue and confirm the blessings we experience.

“I personally feel blessed by the time I have spent serving our great state and would like to observe a time of prayer and fasting before God takes me on to the next part of my journey. I invite all Kansans to join me as we pray for our state and our nation.”

Leavenworth Road Association to meet Feb. 13

The Leavenworth Road Association will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the Eisenhower Recreation Center, 2901 N. 72nd St., Kansas City, Kansas.

A potluck dinner and social hour will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the meeting at 7 p.m.

The speakers will be Mandi McCoy, Lauren Jilek and possibly others from the new Partners in Primary Care facility in KCK.

Those attending may bring a side dish to share with the group. The LRA will provide a Philly Cheese Casserole for everyone.

Investigation continuing into reported kidnapping case, police say

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department spokesman said an investigation is continuing into a reported kidnapping on Friday afternoon on Farrow Avenue.

A child was safely returned to her mother in this case, according to police.

According to the police spokesman, at 3:36 p.m. Jan. 26, the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department responded to the reported kidnapping of a 1-year-old girl in the 2900 block of Farrow Avenue.

When they arrived, officers learned that a girl had been taken from her apartment by a man and woman in a 1990s model Oldsmobile Alero, according to the spokesman. Information was relayed about the suspect, and officers began checking various locations in the city looking for the child, according to the spokesman.

At 4:56 p.m., police made contact with the suspect, who agreed to meet officers and the family at a gas station in Missouri to return the child, but when officers went there, the suspect never showed up at the location, the police spokesman stated.

At 5:29 p.m. officers received information that the child’s grandmother had located the child and was returning her to the address, according to the police spokesman.

At 6 p.m. Jan. 26, the grandmother returned the child to the address on Farrow, according to the police spokesman. No arrests have been made as of the last official police statement on the case.
