Eagle Days to continue Jan. 21
The 17th annual Eagle Days will continue Jan. 21 at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library, 4051 West Drive, in Wyandotte County Lake Park, 91st and Leavenworth Road. Hours will be noon to 4 p.m. Jan. 21. The event is free and open to the public. It is for all ages. The event will take place simultaneously at the Davis Hall at Wyandotte County Lake, as well as the Schlagle Library. The American bald eagle and birds of prey will be on exhibit at the event. Operation Wildlife will give presentations on live birds of prey at both locations. There will be a children’s craft area at the library, a binocular checkout and a spotting scope station to view migrating birds that visit Wyandotte County Lake in the winter. Harlem Renaissance program to begin with event Jan. 25
The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library will be celebrating the Harlem Renaissance with several events planned this winter. The Harlem Renaissance was an explosion of African-American art and culture in Harlem that started in 1918 and spanned the 1920s and 1930s. During January and February, the library will have art exhibits, movies, book clubs, and concerts, all celebrating the movement and people of Harlem – including an artist from Kansas. The inspiration for this event series was Aaron Douglas, a prominent and influential artist during the Harlem Renaissance. Douglas was born in Topeka, Kansas, and lived there until graduating from high school. Library patrons will be able to learn more about Douglas by attending one of three events held in partnership with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art at 6 p.m. Jan. 25 at West Wyandotte Library, Feb. 1 at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and Feb. 15 at South Branch Library. Bomber history project to be topic of meeting Feb. 8

KCK firefighters train for ice rescues

Kansas City, Kansas, firefighters trained for ice rescues today at Wyandotte County Lake.

Although the top of the ice on the lake has melted in the past few days, there was still an estimated five inches of ice under the slush on the lake, and the water temperature was estimated in the high 30s, according to firefighters. About 20 firefighters trained during the exercise today.

The last two or three winters have been so mild that there wasn’t a chance to train for ice rescues, according to Assistant Chief Scott Hawley, in charge of the rescue division.

“As cold as it’s been this winter, it got really good ice, so we’re trying to get everybody who is part of the rescue operations out on the ice to do it again,” Hawley said. “It’s a good refresher for everybody that’s been doing it for years, but we also have a lot of new people in our rescue crews.”

Chris Warner and other members of the Fire Department put on several layers of gear for the training exercise. The gear included dry suits and water suits, cold weather gloves and feet gear.

Firefighters cut a hole in the ice today and practiced rescuing one another during the training exercise near the boat ramp. They worked on going across the ice to do the rescue, extending a rope to the victim and pulling the victim to safety. They also practiced self-rescuing.

Hawley said he isn’t aware of any actual ice rescues that have happened here recently. Firefighters are hoping no one ventures out on the ice.

Sumner defeats Veritas 57-31

The Sumner Academy Sabres got off to a slow start in Friday’s consolation round game at the Spring Hill Invitational basketball tournament, but they finished with a convincing 57-31 win over the Veritas Christian School Eagles of Lawrence.

Both teams struggled early in the first quarter, with the first basket scored two minutes into the game. The Sabres held a 9-8 advantage at the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Sabres opened the game up, using their physical advantage over the Eagles on both ends of the court to open up a nine-point halftime lead.

Sumner didn’t let up in the second half. De’Auan McClaine, Caleb Brown, and Kyun Jackson each navigated the Eagles defense to score inside.

McClaine led the Sabres with 22 points, with Brown adding 20, and Jackson 8.

The Sabres will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 7:30 p.m. at Barstow High School.
