Three firefighters injured when floor of home collapses

Three firefighters were injured while fighting a fire at 2:53 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at a two-story home at 1604 N. 7th St., according to a Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department spokesman.

Four firefighters were on the second floor when the floor collapsed, the Fire Department spokesman stated in the fire report.

Three firefighters were injured in the fall, the spokesman stated.

Two firefighters were taken to the hospital from the scene, according to the spokesman. One firefighter was taken to the hospital after returning to the fire station, the spokesman stated. The firefighters have since been released from the hospital.

Pumpers attacked the fire from the rear and sides, and a search-and-rescue was conducted, according to the fire report.

The fire was under control, and firefighters were hitting hot spots, when the second story collapsed to the first floor, according to the spokesman.

No residents, or anyone besides the three firefighters, were injured in the fire, according to the report.

In all, 46 persons, as well as five pumpers, two trucks, an EMS unit, two quints and an air trailer responded to the fire, according to the report.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, and is under investigation, according to the spokesman.

The damage to the home was estimated at $35,000, with the contents damage estimated at $5,000, the report stated.

There were no smoke or fire detectors in the home, according to the fire report.

Harlem Renaissance program to continue Feb. 1
The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library will be celebrating the Harlem Renaissance with several events planned this winter. The Harlem Renaissance was an explosion of African-American art and culture in Harlem that started in 1918 and spanned the 1920s and 1930s. During January and February, the library will have art exhibits, movies, book clubs, and concerts, all celebrating the movement and people of Harlem – including an artist from Kansas. The inspiration for this event series was Aaron Douglas, a prominent and influential artist during the Harlem Renaissance. Douglas was born in Topeka, Kansas, and lived there until graduating from high school. Library patrons will be able to learn more about Douglas by attending events held in partnership with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
