Holiday schedule for Keeler Women’s Center

The Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., will be closed Friday, Dec. 22, through Jan. 1, 2018. The center will reopen Jan. 2.

KCK libraries will have holiday schedules
The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Libraries will be closed for the holidays from Sunday, Dec. 24, to Tuesday, Dec. 26, and from Dec. 31 to Jan. 1, for the winter holidays. Additionally, the West Wyandotte Library will be closed Jan. 2 to 7 for renovations.

Program planned on Kansas fossils Dec. 27
A children’s educational program on Kansas fossils is planned from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library, 4051 West Drive, in Wyandotte County Lake Park, Kansas City, Kansas. This program will examine fossils found in Kansas and make replica fossils out of plaster of Paris. Animal track mystery program planned
A children’s nature program is planned on animal tracking from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library, 4051 West Drive, in Wyandotte County Lake Park, Kansas City, Kansas. Those attending will learn to identify the tracks of animals that can be found in neighborhoods and forests and learn the stories those tracks tell. They will use nature stamps to create their own track story to take home, and they may go outdoors to see if they can find real tracks in the park. For more information, call 913-295-8275.

A holiday toy tea party for children and teens is planned from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The event is for girls and boys ages 5 to 12. They are invited to dress in their best holiday outfit, bring their favorite doll, stuffed animal or toy and have afternoon tea served on real china. Finger sandwiches, tea and sweets will be served. The children will learn about etiquette and manners with a visit and stories. Program offered about reptiles in winter
Reptiles in winter will be the topic of an educational nature program offered from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library, 4051 West Drive, in the Wyandotte County Lake Park, Kansas City, Kansas. The program is for all ages. Those attending will meet the snakes and turtles who live at the environmental library and learn about how they survive cold weather in the wild. Presentation planned on native plant gardens Jan. 11
A presentation on native plant gardens will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at the Sunflower Room, Wyandotte County Extension Office, 1208 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kansas. “Go Native! Using Native Plants in Your Landscape” will be presented by Lenora Larson, a Marais des Cygnes, Kan., Extension Master Gardener and member of local chapters of the Idalia Butterfly Society and Kansas Native Plant Society. Her presentation will dispel myths about native plant gardens and will focus on how to install or convert to a native landscape that pleases the plants, the gardener and the neighbors. The presentation is sponsored by the Wyandotte County Extension Master Gardeners. Those attending may bring their lunch. The fee for the program is $5. King Day celebration to be Jan. 15
“Continuing through Love and Peace in Times Like These” will be the theme of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday celebration Monday, Jan. 15, at the Reardon Center, Kansas City, Kansas. Pre-service events start at 10:45 a.m. with the formal program beginning at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts III of New York, N.Y., is the featured speaker. He is the pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. He and his church are active in civil rights, social justice and economic development. Since 1999 he has served as president of the State University of New York at Old Westbury. The event Jan. 15 will begin with a Motorcade for Hunger at 9 a.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church parking lot, 4th and Richmond, leaving at 10 a.m. and arriving at the Reardon Center. Eagle Days to be Jan. 20-21

The 17th annual Eagle Days will be held Jan. 20 and 21 at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library, 4051 West Drive, in Wyandotte County Lake Park, 91st and Leavenworth Road. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 20 and noon to 4 p.m. Jan. 21. The event is free and open to the public. It is for all ages. The event will take place simultaneously at the Davis Hall at Wyandotte County Lake, as well as the Schlagle Library. The American bald eagle and birds of prey will be on exhibit at the event. Operation Wildlife will give presentations on live birds of prey at both locations. There will be a children’s craft area at the library, a binocular checkout and a spotting scope station to view migrating birds that visit Wyandotte County Lake in the winter. Light snow likely Saturday night into Sunday morning

About 1 to 2 inches of snow are possible along the I-70 corridor on Saturday night into Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service. A trace to less than 1 inch is likely south of I-70.

The quick-moving weather system will see higher snowfall amounts to the north, including St. Joseph, Mo., with lighter amounts to the south, the weather service said. Wyandotte County appears to be on the line between the moderate to light snowfall areas.

The forecast calls for light snow to begin possibly around 3 a.m. Sunday in the Wyandotte County area and it could last to about 9 a.m. Sunday, according to the weather service. The storm may be moving from west to the east, and also from the north to the south, forecasters believe.

Visibility may be limited during periods of light to moderate snow, according to the weather service. Roads will be slick where snow accumulates.

Today, the high will be near 33 with partly sunny skies and a north wind of 6 mph, the weather service said.

Tonight, the low will be around 21 with an 80 percent chance of snow showers, mostly after midnight, according to the weather service. There will be a northeast wind of 5 to 8 mph. A new snow accumulation of around an inch is possible.

Sunday, there is a 50 percent chance of snow, mainly before 9 a.m., the weather service said. The skies will gradually clear and there will be a high near 32, with a north wind of 5 to 10 mph becoming west northwest in the afternoon.

Sunday night, it will be mostly clear with a low of 19, according to the weather service. There will be a west southwest wind of 5 to 7 mph.

Monday, Christmas Day, it will be partly sunny with a high near 33 and a light and variable wind becoming southeast around 5 mph in the afternoon, the weather service said.

Monday night, the low will be around 14 with mostly cloudy skies, according to the weather service.

Tuesday, it will be partly sunny with a high near 21, the weather service said.

Tuesday night, the low will be around 10 with mostly cloudy skies, according to the weather service.

Wednesday, the high will be near 26 with mostly sunny skies, the weather service said.

Wednesday night, the low will be around 18 with mostly cloudy skies, according to the weather service.
