Several Wyandotte County students are receiving scholarships from Emporia State (Kan.) University.

Homicide victim at 1600 block of Richmond identified

Police have identified the victim of a homicide Dec. 25 in the 1600 block of Richmond Avenue.

The victim was Ernest Moore Sr., 70, a resident of Kansas City, Kansas, according to a police spokesman.

A police spokesman stated officers were called about 6:01 p.m. Dec. 25 to the 1600 block of Richmond on a report of a shooting.

When they arrived, officers found two persons who had been shot. Moore was found outside the home, deceased from an apparent gunshot wound, according to the police spokesman.

A woman in her 50s was found inside the residence with a gunshot wound, minor injuries, according to police.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is investigating. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

KCK firefighter dies while on duty

Firefighter Jason Garrett, 46, died while on duty at Fire Station 19 this morning, according to a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department.

Garrett, also a paramedic, was found by his coworkers unresponsive in his bed, and was pronounced dead at the station at 80th Terrace and State Avenue, according to the spokesman.

Garrett was a 5.5-year veteran of the Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department, the spokesman stated.

An investigation will determine the cause of death, the spokesman stated. Foul play is not anticipated, according to the spokesman.
