It may be earlier than you think: Set your clocks, check your smoke detector and fire extinguisher

Clocks were turned back one hour overnight, giving residents here an extra hour of sleep.

While setting clocks, it’s a good idea to check or change the batteries in your smoke detector.

Also, this year it is a good idea to check the name and number on your fire extinguishers. Kidde has announced a recall of fire extinguishers with plastic handles because of the failure to discharge and nozzle detachment. There are 37.8 million extinguishers recalled in the United States. The extinguishers were manufactured from 1973 through August 2017. To check your extinguisher’s model number against the recall list, visit https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2018/Kidde-Recalls-Fire-Extinguishers-with-Plastic%20Handles-Due-to-Failure-to-Discharge-and-Nozzle-Detachment-One-Death-Reported.

Consumers also may call Kidde toll-free at 855-271-0773 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET Saturday and Sunday, or online at www.kidde.com and click on “Product Safety Recall” for more information.

The Central Avenue Betterment Association sponsored its first Central Avenue Day of the Dead Parade on Saturday evening.

The parade route ran from 6th Street and Central Avenue west to 16th Street. Approximately 20 vehicles took part in the parade.

Crowds of booths and families lined both sides of Central Avenue near the end of the route, and singers performed on stages.

Parade participants as well as many spectators celebrated the Mexican heritage of the Day of the Dead with the colorful and haunting pageantry characteristic of the day.
