Sykes to speak tonight about civil rights

“Alvin Sykes Speaks: A Conversation on Racial Justice in America,” will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Kansas City, Mo., Health Department auditorium, 2400 Troost Ave., Kansas City, Mo.

Sykes, who has worked with civil rights issues for years in the Kansas City area, will speak about his life and work, and civil rights.

Sykes was a force in getting the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act and its renewal law passed.

The event is free and open to the public.

Injury-accident reported on I-70 near I-635 exit

A man was injured in an accident at 6:04 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, on westbound I-70 near the I-635 exit, according to a Kansas Turnpike Authority trooper’s report.

The report stated that a Saturn Ion struck a Honda Accord in the rear, and then the Honda Accord struck a Hummer H3 in the rear.

The driver of the Hummer, a 54-year-old man from Kansas City, Mo., was injured and taken to a hospital, according to the trooper’s report.

The driver of the Saturn Ion, an 18-year-old woman from Kansas City, Mo., was not injured, the trooper’s report stated.

The driver of the Honda Accord, a 49-year-old man from Kansas City, Mo., also was not injured, according to the trooper’s report.
