Candidate forums planned Oct. 17, 18

Business West, in cooperation other neighborhood and business organizations and Kansas City Kansas Community College, will sponsor candidates’ forums from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, and Wednesday, Oct. 18, in the Upper Jewell building at the Community College.

The candidates running for Mayor, Sheriff, Unified Government Commissioner and the Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Public Utilities will appear Tuesday, Oct. 17. Candidates running for the Community College Board of Trustees and the Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Education will appear Wednesday, Oct. 18.

Candidates will present introductory remarks and then answer questions from a panel of neighborhood and business association executives and Mary Rupert, editor of Wyandotte Daily Online.

The forums will be taped and replayed on Channel 17, the community college’s public access channel on the Spectrum system.

The general election will be Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Warm weather returns, strong storms possible Saturday

Scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected along a cold front Saturday evening and overnight across the entire outlook area, according to the National Weather Service.

Some of these storms could become strong to severe, the weather service said.

Today’s high will be near 63, with mostly cloudy skies gradually becoming sunny, the weather service said. A northwest wind of 6 mph will become calm in the afternoon.

Tonight, the low will be around 47 with mostly clear skies and a light southeast wind, according to the weather service.

Thursday, there may be patchy fog before 10 a.m., the weather service said. The skies later will be sunny with a high of 74, and a south southeast wind of 5 to 10 mph.

Thursday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 60 mph and a south wind of 7 mph, according to the weather service.

Friday, it will be sunny with a high of 84, and a south wind of 7 to 11 mph, the weather service said.

Friday night, there is a 50 percent chance of storms and rain, mainly after 1 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 64. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is expected.

Saturday, there is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 82, the weather service said.

Saturday night, there is an 80 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, according to the weather service. A thunderstorm is possible after 1 a.m. The low will be 56.

Sunday, there is a 30 percent chance of showers before 1 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 85.

Sunday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 46, according to the weather service.

Man dies in traffic accident in the 3200 block of Parallel

A man in his early 70s died after an accident at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday on Parallel Parkway near 32nd Street, according to police.

A police spokesman stated that a silver sport utility vehicle collided with a blue sedan.

The SUV was westbound on Parallel Parkway and struck the blue sedan, which was entering Parallel from southbound 32nd Street, the police spokesman stated.

The driver of the sedan was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the spokesman said. The driver of the SUV was transported to a hospital with minor injuries, according to police.

The identity of the fatality victim will not be released until there is positive identification and family notification, according to the spokesman.

The accident is under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s Traffic Support Unit-Critical Collision Response Team.
