Severe thunderstorm warning issued

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning until 5:30 p.m. for Wyandotte County and some surrounding areas.

A severe thunderstorm was in Kansas City at 4:42 p.m., moving northeast at 50 mph, the weather service said.
The storm includes 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail.

Hail damage to vehicles is expected, the weather service said. Wind damage is possible eto roofs, siding and trees.

Kansas City, Kansas, Bonner Springs and Edwardsville are among the locations affected by the storm. Also, areas in Johnson County, Kan., and on the Missouri side of the state line are affected.

Residents should move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building, the weather service said.

Hail, winds possible with thunderstorm moving into area

A strong thunderstorm was located near Lawrence, Kan., about 4:08 p.m. Saturday, moving east at 30 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Nickel-sized hail and winds in excess of 40 mph are possible with this storm, according to the weather service.

Kansas City, Kansas, Bonner Springs and Edwardsville are in the path of the storm, along with other communities in Johnson County, Kansas, and in Missouri.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm and could lead to local flooding, according to the weather service. Motorists are advised not to drive vehicles through flooded roadways.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm, the weather service said.

Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle, the weather service said.

This storm may intensify, so monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service, or visit www.weather.gov.
