A dramatic goal at the end of the first half wasn’t enough to prevent Kansas City Kansas Community College from dropping a 3-1 women’s soccer decision to Johnson County Tuesday.

Trailing 2-0, Bishop Ward sophomore Serena Ortiz booted in a 20-yard shot on an assist from DeSoto freshman Carmen Rush with just 19 seconds remaining in the half.

The goal kept the Lady Blue Devils within one goal until the final four minutes when Cortlyn Ash scored a game-clinching goal for the Cavaliers.

The loss dropped KCKCC to 5-5 overall and 2-4 in the Jayhawk Conference heading into a re-match with Neosho County Saturday at Chanute at 5 p.m. Neosho took a 1-0 win at KCKCC in the first meeting of the two teams Sept. 5.

Johnson County, meanwhile, took over second place (5-1) in the Jayhawk behind unbeaten Butler County (6-0). The Cavaliers, who are 7-3 overall, took a 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the game Tuesday on a goal by Millie Hopkisson assisted by Manuela Gonzalez and then made it 2-0 midway through the opening half on a Gonzalez goal assisted by Ryann Noyce.

KCKCC goalkeeper Morgan Longstreth had 18 saves on shots on goal for KCKCC.
