Recreation center renaming ceremony to be Sept. 30

The John F. Kennedy Recreation Center recently was renamed in honor of Beatrice L. Lee, a community leader who served as the director of two recreation centers in Kansas City, Kansas. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the renaming will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at the center, 1210 N. 10th St., in the 10th and Washington Avenue area, Kansas City, Kansas. Sporting KC takes on New England on Saturday night in KCK

Sporting Kansas City (10-6-11, 41 points) moved within three points of first place in the Western Conference following a 1-1 draw at Columbus Crew SC on Sunday. Manager Peter Vermes’ men will now return home to kick off a four-game homestand that begins Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against the New England Revolution (10-12-5, 35 points) in Kansas City, Kansas.

FOX Sports Kansas City and FOX Sports Midwest will televise three hours of live coverage at Children’s Mercy Park beginning at 7 p.m., while local radio calls will air on Sports Radio 810 WHB (English) and La Grande 1340 AM (Spanish). In addition, The Final Whistle postgame show will air immediately after the match on 810 WHB.

Tickets for Saturday’s interconference clash are available at SeatGeek.com, and the first 5,000 fans through the stadium gates will receive a free Sporting KC wall decal.

Sporting Kansas City is currently riding a club-record 22-game home unbeaten streak in the MLS regular season, tied for the fourth longest run in MLS history.

All remaining tickets for the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final between Sporting Kansas City and the New York Red Bulls are on sale to the public at SeatGeek.com. Serving as U.S. Soccer’s National Championship, the Open Cup Final is slated for 8 p.m. next Wednesday, Sept. 20, at world-class Children’s Mercy Park. The highly anticipated showdown will be televised nationally on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes.

Medicare open enrollment events scheduled

Medicare open enrollment assistance events will be held Tuesday, Oct. 17, and Wednesday, Nov. 8.

U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder, R-3rd Dist., will sponsor these events.

The Oct. 17 event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Olathe Community Center, and the Nov. 8 event will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kansas.

Volunteers from the Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas (SHICK) program will attend to give one-on-one help to seniors who have questions or who want to make changes to their plans.

The Medicare Open Enrollment Period extends from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. Medicare beneficiaries who wish to make changes or enroll for the first time need to bring their Medicare card, any current prescriptions (including dosage and frequency), and a list of preferred pharmacies. The event is free and open to the public.
