Candidate forum scheduled tonight

A candidate forum is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Kansas City Kansas Community College, lower Jewell Building, Room 2325-2326, at 7250 State Ave.

The forum for persons running for office in Wyandotte County is sponsored by the Greater Kansas City Women’s Political Caucus. Interested candidates were asked to fill out a form in advance of the event.

Residents meet about flooding on south side of KCK

Residents heard Tuesday that the flood gates were not open during a recent flood on the south side of Kansas City, Kansas.

The meeting between residents and Unified Government staff on flooding on the south side of Kansas City, Kansas, was held Tuesday night.

According to Commissioner Ann Brandau-Murguia, residents were told by Unified Government staff that a recent instance of flooding was a mistake, and the flood gates were not open during a recent flood.

Commissioner Murguia said the next step will be for the UG to look at how to remedy the situation, and how to take care of residents who had a lot of damage from flooding.

The meeting with residents was held on Tuesday night at the South Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library at 3104 Strong Ave.

Another meeting with residents and UG staff is scheduled at 8 p.m. Oct. 9 at the South Patrol police station at South 21st and Metropolitan, she said. They will talk about the damage that the residents had, she said. With flooding, often everyone’s damage is different, she added.

It is possible that some areas may have had different causes for flooding.

Semi hit-and-run accident reported on I-70

A possible injury was reported after a semi sideswiped a car Sept. 19 on eastbound I-70 near 10th Street, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s report.

The semi left the scene of the accident, according to the trooper’s report. It was listed as a hit-and-run.

A Buick Century was eastbound on I-70 about 6:23 p.m. Tuesday when a semi moved into another lane, sideswiping the Century, according to the trooper’s report. The Century then spun out.

A 10-month-old Kansas City, Kansas, boy who was a passenger in the Century had a possible injury and was taken to the hospital, the trooper’s report stated.

The driver of the Century, a 33-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, man, was not injured, according to the trooper’s report.
