Many offices to be closed on Fourth of July

Unified Government and Board of Public Utilities offices will be closed on the Fourth of July holiday.

In addition, Independence Day is a federal and state holiday. Many businesses also are closed on July 4.

The UG and BPU offices are open on Monday, July 3, closed on Tuesday, July 4, and will reopen on Wednesday, July 5.

The BPU’s customer service lobby and business offices will be closed July 4. Emergency service is available around the clock and on holidays; for electric emergencies, call 913-573-9522, and for water emergencies, call 913-573-9622.

There is no trash service or recycling service from Deffenbaugh – Waste Management on July 4 for residential customers. If their usual trash collection day is on Tuesday, July 4, residential trash will be collected on Wednesday, July 5. There will be a delay of one day for the rest of the week, also, for residential customers. The normal schedule will resume on Monday, July 10.

Business and commercial customers of Waste Management will not be affected by the holiday, and the normal business and commercial collection schedule will continue July 4 and the rest of the week.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library and its branches will be closed on Tuesday, July 4.

The mail will not be delivered on July 4, as it is a U.S. Postal Service holiday.

With many businesses and offices closed, call first before you go to see if it is open.

Slight chance of storms today, strong storms possible for Fourth of July

There is a slight chance for storms today, according to the National Weather Service.

However, any storms today would not be severe, the weather service added. The Wyandotte County forecast calls for a chance of rain or storms mainly after 1 a.m. Tuesday.

There is a chance for storms Independence Day and again on Wednesday, according to the weather service. A few of those storms could be strong with small hail and gusty winds possible.

There is a 40 percent chance of storms on the Fourth of July during the daytime, and a 50 percent chance of rain the evening of July 4, according to the forecast.

Today’s forecast, according to the weather service, will be mostly sunny, with a high near 88 and a south southeast wind of 3 to 6 mph.

Tonight, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and storms, mostly after 1 a.m. Thursday. The low will be around 70, with a south-southeast wind of 3 to 6 mph. Between a tenth and quarter-inch of rain is possible.

On Tuesday, Independence Day, expect a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, the weather service said. It will be mostly cloudy with a high near 85 and a south wind of 5 to 7 mph. Between a tenth and quarter-inch of rain is possible.

On the evening of the Fourth of July, there is a 50 percent chance of showers and storms, according to the weather service. It will be mostly cloudy with a low of 69. Between a half and three-quarters of an inch of rain is possible.

On Wednesday, there will be a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 85. A light and variable wind will change to northwest around 6 mph in the morning. Between a tenth and quarter of an inch of rain is possible.

Wednesday night, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 69, according to the weather service.

Thursday, it will be sunny with a high near 91, the weather service said.

Thursday night, expect a low of 72 with mostly clear skies, according to the weather service.

Friday, it will be mostly sunny with a high of about 90, the weather service said.

Friday night, the low will be around 68 with partly cloudy skies, according to the weather service.

Saturday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 87, the weather service said.

Saturday night, expect partly cloudy skies and a low of 66, according to the weather service.

Another shooting reported in 1800 block of North 36th

Kansas City, Kansas, police are investigating another shooting on Sunday afternoon in the 1800 block of North 36th Street.

According to a police spokesman, a call came in about the shooting at 5:15 p.m.

The victim is a man in his 20s, according to police, who is in serious condition at this time.

Police do not believe this shooting was related to other shootings this weekend, the spokesman stated.

A fatal shooting occurred in the parking area of a laundromat near 48th and Parallel Parkway at 3:35 p.m. Sunday, police said earlier today. Another homicide was reported about 3:43 a.m. Sunday in the 300 block of Waverly involving a rolling disturbance in vehicles on 3rd Street.

Two other homicides were reported Saturday, including one at 6:45 p.m. in the 100 block of Walker Avenue, and one at 1:15 a.m. Saturday in the 4300 block of Lloyd, according to police. The homicides are not believed to be related.
