Suspect in custody in child abduction case

A male suspect was taken into custody on July 13 in Leavenworth County in connection with a child abduction case, according to the spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

The child was abducted while in a car near 7th and Riverview in Kansas City, Kansas, on July 12. The child was later found safe in the car in Leavenworth County.

The suspect was taken into custody by two Leavenworth County sheriff’s deputies, the spokesman said.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department is seeking assistance in identifying a female the case.

After a brief respite from the heat, warm and muggy conditions will return by the early to middle part of next week, according to the National Weather Service.

Today, there will a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the morning, the weather service said, with a high near 84. Currently, there are showers to the south and east of Wyandotte County. There will be an east northeast wind of 3 to 6 mph.

Expect heat index values to return to above 100 by Tuesday and persist above 100 through the rest of the week, the weather service said.

There will be a few chances for some isolated to scattered thunderstorms across the northern part of the region through the week, according to the weather service. Higher chances for rain could return by late next week.

Tonight, expect a low of 68 with a light east wind, according to the weather service.

Saturday, it will be sunny with a high near 88 and a calm wind becoming east around 5 mph in the afternoon, the weather service said.

Saturday night, expect a low of 68 with a light and variable wind, according to the weather service.

Sunday, it will be sunny with a high near 91 and a light and variable wind, the weather service said.

Sunday night, the low will be around 69, according to the weather service.

Monday, it will be sunny with a high of 92, the weather service said.

Monday night, the low will be 72 with mostly clear skies, according to the weather service.

Tuesday, there will be sunny skies with a high near 93, the weather service said.

Fourth person in accident at 63rd and Rowland dies

A fourth person has died from injuries in an accident at 63rd and Rowland, according to a Kansas City, Kansas, police spokesman.

The victim was Cory J. Thornburgh, 18, a resident of Shawnee, Kansas, police stated.

Two who died earlier in the crash were identified as Hayden Gottman, 20, a resident of Lenexa, Kansas, and Joshua Lindsey, 18, a resident of Overland Park, Kansas, a police spokesman said.

A third occupant of the vehicle died later from his injuries at a hospital. He was identified as Cameron T. Shafer, 20, a resident of Kansas City, Kansas, police said.

An initial investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department has determined that a green Toyota truck was stolen and was southbound on North 63rd Street when it collided with a tree in the early hours of Sunday, July 9.

Two of the persons in the vehicle were dead when officers were arrived. Two others were in critical condition at that time. One occupant of the stolen vehicle stole the vehicle of a good Samaritan who stopped to help them.
