Excessive heat returns Tuesday; ozone alert in effect

Temperatures will climb into the mid-90s today, but the heat index should remain below 100 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Expect highs in the mid to upper 90s and a few 100-degree highs after Thursday with heat index values to returning to above 100 degrees by Tuesday and persisting between 105 to 110 through the rest of the week into Saturday, the weather service said.

An excessive heat watch has been issued for Wyandotte County for noon Tuesday, July 18, through 8 p.m. Saturday, July 22, but the weather service said these watches and warnings could change later.

There is an orange ozone alert today, according to the weather service. People and businesses are asked to avoid activities that lead to ozone formation, including refueling vehicles and using gasoline-powered lawn equipment. Residents are asked to carpool, bike to work, delay or combine errands and use water-based paints and cleaners.

Individuals may consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects, the weather service said. Those who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated level of pollutants include the very young, and those with pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. People with symptoms should consider consulting their physicians.

There are no strong chances for significant precipitation this week, with the first chance being on the weekend, according to the weather service.

Today, it will be sunny with a high near 94 and a south wind of 3 to 5 mph, the weather service said.

Tonight, it will be clear with a low of 74 and a south southeast wind of 3 to 6 mph, according to the weather service.

Tuesday, it will be sunny with a high near 95, the weather service said. The heat index may rise to 100. There will be a south southwest wind of 3 to 8 mph.

Tuesday night, expect mostly clear skies with a low of 75, according to the weather service. There will be a south wind of 6 to 8 mph.

Wednesday, it will be mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 97, the weather service said, and a south southwest wind of 6 to 8 mph.

Wednesday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 77, according to the weather service.

Thursday, it will be sunny and hot, with a high near 99, the weather service said.

Thursday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 78, according to the weather service.

Friday, it will be sunny and hot, with a high near 100, the weather service said.

Friday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 78, according to the weather service.

Saturday, there will be a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, the weather service said. It will be mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 99.

Saturday night, the low will be about 75, according to the weather service.

Sunday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 95, the weather service said.

KCK police investigate homicide in 1200 block of Everett

Kansas City, Kansas, police are investigating a homicide in the 1200 block of Everett Avenue.

According to a police spokesman, officers responded to a call about 3:06 p.m. Sunday, July 16, about a man who was lying on the ground outside in the 1200 block of Everett Avenue.

Police who arrived at the address found a man in his 20s dead from an apparent gunshot wound, the spokesman said.

The identity of the victim will not be released, pending positive identification and family notification.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
