Meet a rescue pet at the library
All ages are invited to meet a rescue pet from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at the West Wyandotte Library, Conference Room B, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kansas. The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City will bring rescue pets to meet people.

‘Water/Ways Exhibition’ planned at Schlagle Library
A “Water/Ways Exhibition” is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 4051 West Drive. The park entrance is at 91st and Leavenworth Road. A display on the history of Wyandotte County Lake will be presented.

Motorcycle ride fundraiser planned for firefighter
A benefit Dice Run for Capt. James Sparks, a firefighter recently diagnosed with ALS, is planned on Saturday, June 24. Registration is from 11 a.m. to noon at Hooters at The Legends Outlets. The route goes through Kansas City, Kansas, Leavenworth, Tonganoxie, Eudora and ends in Bonner Springs. Entry fee is a $25 donation.

KCK Street Blues Festival planned Saturday
The Kansas City, Kansas, Street Blues Festival is planned from 3 to 11 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at 3924 N. 49th Drive, Kansas City, Kansas. The Street Blues Festival will feature performers “King” Bill Carter, C.J. Walker, Bobby Carson, Bob and Diana Suckiel, Danny Cox, Jack Wilson, Karla and Too Bad Jim, and Lemuel Sheppard. Those attending may bring coolers, lawn chairs and blankets. The festival benefits Kansas City musicians and the children’s charities of Widow’s Sons No. 17 Masonic Lodge Past Masters of KCK. The location is at Lavender’s Circle L Ranch, about a mile north of Leavenworth Road, at the bluffs near the Missouri River. There is a $10 donation per person. Free concert planned tonight at Legends Outlets
The Legends Outlets will continue its free outdoor concert series, Legends Live, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday evening, June 24. The concert is at the Civic Courtyard Fountain at The Legends Outlets. The band on June 24 will be “Run With It,” a powerhouse” trio playing funk, pop-rock hits from the 1980s to now.

Sioux City visits T-Bones on Saturday
The Sioux City Explorers will play the Kansas City T-Bones in baseball action at 7:05 p.m. June 24 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, Kansas City, Kansas. Post-game fireworks are planned. For more information, visit http://www.tbonesbaseball.com/.

Police standoff ends without incident

A standoff ended without incident this afternoon in the 600 block of Nebraska Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas.

According to a Kansas City, Kansas, police spokesman, one of the subjects in a robbery case was taken into custody without incident at 11:47 a.m. Friday, June 23, while another subject was taken into custody without incident while leaving the residence about 4:20 p.m. Friday, June 23.

Detectives had been watching a residence in the 600 block of Nebraska today after receiving information that two suspects from an armed robbery were inside.

After one subject exited, officers believed there was another person inside the residence refusing to come out, and a barricade incident developed, according to the spokesman.

After several hours of trying to negotiate with the subject, he came out without incident and was taken into custody, the police spokesman stated.

The robbery that the detectives were investigating took place at 10:35 p.m. June 10 at 1843 Village West Parkway in Kansas City, Kansas, according to police.

Grant awarded to fund emergency service programs in Wyandotte County

Wyandotte County has been awarded $77,754 in federal funds under the National Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) through the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency to assist the homeless and near homeless in 2017. Funding for Phase 34 EFSP funding has been announced and applications are now being accepted.

EFSP consists of representatives from The Salvation Army; American Red Cross; United Jewish Communities; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A.; and United Way Worldwide.

The national board is distributing funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high need areas around the country. Locally, the distribution of funding is administered by United Way of Wyandotte County for agencies that have programs providing food pantries, food kitchens, food vouchers, rent and mortgage assistance, and shelter.

Agencies may receive an application by contacting Todd Jordan at the United Way of Wyandotte County at [email protected] or 913-371-3674 ext. 1322. Applications are due by 12 p.m. July 5.

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, 2) be eligible to receive Federal funds, 3) have an accounting system, 4) practice nondiscrimination, 5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 6) if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply. Agencies applying must have, or be willing to obtain, electronic fund transfer capabilities. After the applications are received, a committee representing community members and local agencies will determine which agencies will be eligible to receive funding.

Agencies receiving funds from the program in 2016 were Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, Cross-Lines Community Outreach, Economic Opportunity Foundation, Friends of Yates, Metro Lutheran Ministry, Mt. Carmel Community Outreach, Salvation Army, and United Way of Wyandotte County.
