Town hall meeting planned Tuesday night for 8th District

A town hall meeting for the Unified Government Commission, 8th District, will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, at the Eisenhower Recreation Center, 2901 N. 72nd St., Kansas City, Kansas.

Light refreshments will be from 6 to 6:30 p.m.

The meeting is sponsored by UG Commissioner Jane Philbrook. Those attending will hear updates from Commissioner Philbrook and some of the UG staff. This meeting is not devoted to the Indian Springs proposal.

Civitan Club to meet Wednesday in KCK

Civitan, an International Community Service Organization is building a new Civitan Club in Kansas City, Kansas. The new club’s next meeting is at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, at The Dotte Spot, 8123 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas.

The Lancaster-Melton Peace Keepers Civitan Club is sponsored by the Lawrence ACTION Civitan Club. A spokesman said the club’s main objective is to keep the two officers’ memory alive by working together on projects that improve the community. It also hopes to increase the support of law enforcement officers in the community, as well as supporting efforts to help make the community a better place to live, work, and play.

“We are looking for community members to come out to our next meeting to discover more about Civitan,” said Frank Kelley, Civitan International Heartland District Governor and lead club builder. “We ask community members to come out in support of the two slain officers as well as those who continue to serve.”

Civitan International was founded in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1917 and is celebrating its 100th year this year. Civitan Club membership is open to anyone who is at least 18 years old and of good character.

All community members interested in serving and making a difference are encouraged to come out to the April 26 meeting.

Fire Department issues burn ban

The Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department has issued a burn ban because of high winds, according to an announcement today.

The ban will be in effect now through 7 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, a spokesman stated.

All open outdoor fires will need to be extinguished until the ban is over, the spokesman said. The Fire Department will decide on Tuesday morning whether to extend the burn ban, depending on the weather, according to a spokesman.

No “open burn” permits will be issued until after 7 a.m. April 25, according to the spokesman. The city’s open burn ordinance will remain in effect once the open burn ban is over. Residents need a permit from a fire station for open burning.
