Christ the King Catholic Church, 3024 N. 53rd St., Kansas City, Kan., plans a parish mission at 7 p.m. Feb. 13 to 15. The Rev. Dave Pivonka will present the mission, whose theme is “Spiritual Freedom.”

A Valentine’s Dance will be held from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at St. Anthony Catholic Church hall, 615 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan. The German-American Edelweiss Society is the host for the dance. Attorney general to speak at Fairfax meeting
Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt is scheduled to speak at the Feb. 9 meeting of the Fairfax Industrial Association. The luncheon meeting will be at 11:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at the Board of Public Utilities offices, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Schmidt plans to speak about current consumer scams and the fraud and abuse division. Tickets are $20 for FIA members and $25 for nonmembers. Master Food Volunteer training to begin Feb. 15
The Master Food Volunteer Training Program will start Feb. 15. This program allows people with interests in food, cooking, and nutrition to take their expertise to a higher level while developing new avenues for helping in the community. 25th annual Black History and Scholarship Banquet planned Feb. 17-18
The 25th Black History and Scholarship Banquet will be held Feb. 17 and 18 in Kansas City, Kan. The host of the event is the Unified Government’s Black History Committee. The committee is a partner with the Kansas City, Kan., Public Library and Kansas City Kansas Community College to bring Jane Elliott, a lecturer and diversity trainer, to Kansas City, Kan., for the two-day event. Elliott will deliver two presentations during her two day stay in Kansas City, Kan. On Friday, Feb. 17, Elliott will deliver a two hour lecture from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the “Anatomy of Prejudice” at Memorial Hall located at 600 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan. This event is free and open to the public. On Saturday, Feb. 18, Elliott will deliver the keynote message “Power, Perception, and Prejudice” during the Black History and Scholarship Banquet at the Jack Reardon Convention Center, at 500 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The two hour banquet starts at 6 p.m. Scholarships will be presented to local college students and there will be an award presentation to acknowledge a local black entrepreneur. Jazz on the Lake fundraiser planned Feb. 18
The Bonner Springs Library is gearing up for a biennial fundraiser featuring the Kicks Band, barbecue, and live and silent auctions. Jazz on the Lake will be from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Lake of the Forest Clubhouse, Bonner Springs. UG to meet Feb. 23
The Unified Government Commission plans to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Commission Chambers, lobby level, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan. A public hearing is scheduled on the revised 2017 and proposed 2018 budgets. There will be an opportunity for the public to comment on budget priorities and initiatives. Exercise program for older adults offered

“Stay Strong, Stay Healthy,” an 8-week exercise program for older adults, will be offered beginning April 4. The program targets strength, balance and flexibility. Eric Jerome Dickey to appear in KCK
Kansas City, Kan., Public Library will be the host for popular urban fiction author Eric Jerome Dickey as part of the tour for his latest book “Finding Gideon.” The event will take place at 2:30 p.m. April 29 at the Reardon Convention Center at 5th and Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, Kan. Following a moderated question-and-answer session, Dickey will sign books. Books will be available for purchase and a limited number of free copies will be given away to the first to arrive. Keeler Women’s Center, a ministry of the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan., offers individual and couples counseling to women and men who might otherwise not be able to afford counseling. Injuries reported in fire at 60th and Sewell

Two residents and one firefighter were reported injured in a fire at 10:44 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at a home at 6015 Sewell Ave., Kansas City, Kan.

A Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department spokesman said two occupants and one firefighter were taken to area hospitals for evaluation. Another resident was treated at the scene, the spokesman said.

When crews arrived, within 5 minutes of the call, they saw heavy smoke and fire coming from a one-story wood-framed residence, the spokesman said.

The structure was heavily involved with fire showing from the front and roof, according to the spokesman.

The fire was brought under control within 60 minutes, the spokesman said.

The fire investigator is looking into the cause of the fire, which is currently undetermined, according to the spokesman.

The total fire loss was estimated at $185,000, including the structure and contents. The pre-fire value of the structure involved was estimated at $85,000.
