UG to kick off United Way campaign Feb. 14
The Unified Government will kick off its United Way of Wyandotte County campaign at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, with a flag-raising ceremony in front of the Wyandotte County Courthouse on 7th Street. The ceremony will include remarks by public officials. The campaign will go through March 15.
Support group offered for caregivers

The Master Food Volunteer Training Program will start Feb. 15. This program allows people with interests in food, cooking, and nutrition to take their expertise to a higher level while developing new avenues for helping in the community. 25th annual Black History and Scholarship Banquet planned Feb. 17-18
The 25th Black History and Scholarship Banquet will be held Feb. 17 and 18 in Kansas City, Kan. The host of the event is the Unified Government’s Black History Committee. The committee is a partner with the Kansas City, Kan., Public Library and Kansas City Kansas Community College to bring Jane Elliott, a lecturer and diversity trainer, to Kansas City, Kan., for the two-day event. Elliott will deliver two presentations during her two day stay in Kansas City, Kan. On Friday, Feb. 17, Elliott will deliver a two hour lecture from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the “Anatomy of Prejudice” at Memorial Hall located at 600 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan. This event is free and open to the public. On Saturday, Feb. 18, Elliott will deliver the keynote message “Power, Perception, and Prejudice” during the Black History and Scholarship Banquet at the Jack Reardon Convention Center, at 500 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The two hour banquet starts at 6 p.m. Scholarships will be presented to local college students and there will be an award presentation to acknowledge a local black entrepreneur. Jazz on the Lake fundraiser planned Feb. 18
The Bonner Springs Library is gearing up for a biennial fundraiser featuring the Kicks Band, barbecue, and live and silent auctions. Jazz on the Lake will be from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Lake of the Forest Clubhouse, Bonner Springs. UG to meet Feb. 23
The Unified Government Commission plans to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Commission Chambers, lobby level, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan. A public hearing is scheduled on the revised 2017 and proposed 2018 budgets. There will be an opportunity for the public to comment on budget priorities and initiatives. Chronic disease management class offered
The Shepherd’s Center of KCK, in partnership with KU’s Landon Center on Aging, will offer a free weekly Chronic Disease Management class, beginning Wednesday, March 1, and running through Wednesday, April 12. Exercise program for older adults offered
“Stay Strong, Stay Healthy,” an 8-week exercise program for older adults, will be offered beginning April 4. The program targets strength, balance and flexibility. Eric Jerome Dickey to appear in KCK
Kansas City, Kan., Public Library will be the host for popular urban fiction author Eric Jerome Dickey as part of the tour for his latest book “Finding Gideon.” The event will take place at 2:30 p.m. April 29 at the Reardon Convention Center at 5th and Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, Kan. Following a moderated question-and-answer session, Dickey will sign books. Books will be available for purchase and a limited number of free copies will be given away to the first to arrive.
