Injury reported in icy crash on I-70

Two persons were injured in a crash at 10 a.m. Dec. 18 on westbound I-70, west of I-635, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s report.

A Chevy Impala hit a patch of ice on the highway, causing it to slide into the back of a semi, then off the roadway, striking a Honda Accord on the right shoulder, the trooper’s report stated.

The driver of the Impala, a 59-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man, was injured and taken to the hospital, the report stated.

A passenger in the Impala, a 40-year-old Kansas City, Kan., woman, also was injured and taken to a hospital, according to the report.

The driver of the semi, a 57-year-old man from Jasper, Minn., was not injured, the report stated.

The driver of the Accord, a 59-year-old man from Overbrook, Kan., also was not injured, the report stated. He was not in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

A passenger in the Accord, a 64-year-old woman from Overbrook, Kan., had a possible injury, the trooper’s report stated.

Regular bus service resumes today

RideKC transit will provide regular weekday service on Monday, Dec. 19, according to a news release from KCATA.

Transit service had been limited on Saturday and Sunday because of the Dec. 17 storm. Local public works crews, along with KCATA’s own facilities crews, have been working through the weekend to make roads passable.

Because of conditions on side streets and sidewalks, RideKC Access paratransit has activated Phase A of the Inclement Weather Plan for the morning. Customers may experience delays of 30 to 60 minutes past scheduled pick up times. RideKC Access (Share-A-Fare) is a transportation program that provides alternate transportation to persons whose disability prevents them from using the regular fixed-route bus service. Customer questions or cancellations can be directed to the Share-A-Fare office at (816) 842-9070.

From 7:30 to 10 a.m., a warming bus will be provided at the Mission Transit Center for customers making transfer connections in Johnson County.

Frigid temperatures continue this morning

There will be another very cold morning in Wyandotte County today, according to the National Weather Service.

At 8 a.m., the temperature was 6 degrees, with a wind chill value of minus 5, the weather service said. The wind was southwest at 6 mph.

But today, the temperature will rise to a high of 29, with sunny skies, according to the weather service. Wind chill values will be between minus 3 and 7, with a south southwest wind of 5 to 9 mph. Tonight, the low will be around 17.

Looking ahead to Saturday, Christmas Eve, and Sunday, Christmas Day, there is a chance of snow, the weather service said. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent on Saturday night, with a low of 34, and at this time the area could get both rain and snow. On Christmas Day, there is a 50 percent chance of rain and snow, with a high near 39, according to the weather service.

On Tuesday, Dec. 20, the forecast calls for sunny skies and a high near 41, according to the weather service. There will be a southwest wind of 6 to 8 mph. Tuesday night, the low will be 22 with a south southwest wind of 3 to 6 mph.

Wednesday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 44, according to the weather service, with a south wind of 6 to 9 mph becoming west northwest in the afternoon. Wednesday night, the low will be around 26.

Thursday, it will be sunny with a high near 41, the weather service said. Thursday night, the low will be around 28.

Friday, expect a high near 44 with partly sunny skies, according to the weather service. Friday night, the low will be around 29.

Saturday, the high will be near 42, with partly sunny skies, the weather service said.
