KCK school officials start planning for construction as school bond issue passes overwhelmingly

by Mary Rupert

Just a couple days after passage of a $235 million school bond issue, Kansas City, Kan., Public School officials are already meeting to determine a construction management firm.

The Kansas City, Kan., Public School bond issue passed overwhelmingly at the polls on Tuesday night, with 78.5 percent of the vote. There were 23,053 yes votes to 6,289 no votes.

“We are thrilled by the confidence that the community has expressed in us, and we intend to make the best use of that money, and continue to work hard to graduate every student prepared for college and careers. It’s a strong show of support, and we’re thrilled,” said David Smith, a spokesman for the district. He added it was considered by some to be the largest margin of victory of any school bond issue they had seen.

Smith said once a construction management firm is selected, then the district can begin to lay out the projects.

“We know we can’t do everything at once,” he said. The district and the construction management firm will have to figure out what needs to be done first, and come up with a timeline.

At community forums, district officials said the bond issue will pay for four new schools, two elementary and two middle schools. It also will pay for repairs and maintenance at every school, Smith said. Many other projects were spelled out in the community forums held before the election.

Welborn Elementary School will be replaced with a new building at the same site, while White Church and Bethel elementaries will be combined into one new school on the White Church site, he said.

West and Coronado middle schools will be combined into a new building on the Coronado site, and Northwest Middle will have a new building on the Northwest site, he said.

Smith said there was a good community committee that worked to support the bond issue.

“We did get support, and we were deeply appreciative of that,” he said.

One of the selling points of the bond issue was that it would not increase current property taxes. Smith said he thinks that was important in the bond issue’s passage. The new bond issue replaces an older bond issue for air conditioning the schools that is being paid off.

‘Best defense’ helps propel KCKCC women to first road win

Back at full strength for the first time this season, Kansas City Kansas Community College’s Lady Blue Devils jumped in front early and rolled to a 64-47 win over Washburn University’s JV in Topeka Tuesday night.

The win, KCKCC’s first on the road, improved the Blue Devils’ record to 3-1 heading into this weekend’s annual Keith Lindsey Classic. The Blue Devils will take on Saint Mary JV Friday at 6 p.m. and Penn Valley Saturday at 4 p.m.

Surging to a 20-10 first quarter lead, the Blue Devils widened it to 33-18 at halftime and 57-26 after three quarters.

Four Blue Devils scored in double figures led by sophomore Brooklyn Wagler, who had 16 points and 10 rebounds, her first double double of the season. Brie Tauai just missed a double double with 11 points and nine rebounds while Aeriel Holiday added 11 points and Ky’ana French 10.

“Probably our best game defensively for the first three quarters,” said KCKCC coach Joe McKinstry. Limiting Washburn to just 28.4 percent shooting the first three periods, the Blue Devils also forced 25 turnovers. “We were doing a great job of harassing and making things difficult for them to get anything accomplished offensively. The defensive effort also led to very good execution and easy baskets on the offensive end. The effort fell off drastically in the fourth quarter so we’ll need to focus more on playing a complete game.

“Offensively, Brooklyn Wagler and Brie Tauai were able to impact the game largely in the scoring and rebounding columns and Ky’Ana French gave us a big spark off the bench after redshirting last season and missing the first three games of this season. It was great to see her out there.”

Fort Scott’s women will play Penn Valley in the opening game of the Lindsey Classic Friday at 2 p.m. followed by a men’s game matching Highland and Livin’ The Dream at 4 p.m. Immediately following the KCKCC-Saint Mary JV game, 2016 KCKCC Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will be held and will precede KCKCC’s men’s game against Link Year Prep.
