Community forum planned tonight on KCKPS bond issue

The second of three community forums is planned tonight on the Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools no-tax increase bond referendum.

The forum will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 10 at the South Branch Library, 3104 Strong Ave., Kansas City, Kan.

The bond issue will be on the Nov. 8 general election ballot. This bond referendum will allow the district to make improvements to every school, and build four new ones, all with no increase in taxes for community residents, a spokesman said.

Residents may attend and ask questions of school district officials at the forum.

A third forum on the bond issue will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Main Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan.

Chance of storms in week’s forecast

There is a slight chance of storms in today’s forecast, with widespread thunderstorms predicted Tuesday night into Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Today, Columbus Day, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mostly after 4 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 71, with a south wind of 5 to 11 mph.

Tonight, expect a 30 percent chance of rain and storms before 1 a.m., the weather service said. The low will be around 55 with a south southeast wind of 7 to 9 mph.

Clearing skies along with the arrival of Canadian high pressure from the north will result in chilly early morning temperatures on Thursday, according to the weather service. These conditions will likely result in the first frost of the season for portions of north-central Missouri and far northeastern Kansas.

Tuesday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 77, according to the weather service. A south wind of 8 to 11 mph will gust as high as 23 mph.

Tuesday night, expect a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m., with a low of 57, the weather service said. There will be a south wind of 7 to 9 mph gusting as high as 20 mph.

Wednesday, there will be a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 63, according to the weather service. A west wind of 6 to 11 mph will become north in the afternoon. Winds may gust as high as 18 mph.

Wednesday night will see the lower temperatures, with the low around 40, the weather service said.

Thursday, expect mostly sunny skies and a high of 59, according to the weather service.
Thursday night, there will be a 40 percent chance of showers after 1 a.m., the weather service said. It will be mostly cloudy with a low of 47.

Friday’s forecast will be partly sunny with a high of 67, according to the weather service.

Friday night, the low will be around 58, the weather service said.

On Saturday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 78, according to the weather service.

Police investigate shooting in 200 block of Walker

Kansas City, Kan., police officers are investigating a shooting at 3:20 a.m. Oct. 10 in the 200 block of Walker Avenue.

When officers responded to a shooting at that time, they found a man in his mid-30s who had been shot multiple times, a police spokesman said. He was inside of a residence, the spokesman said.

He was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, the spokesman said.

Witnesses on the scene were able to give officers information that led to a person of interest being taken into custody, the spokesman said.

The shooting is under investigation by the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division. Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
