Business West, Community College to sponsor Candidates’ Forum

Business West, along with other neighborhood associations in Wyandotte County and the Kansas City Kansas Community College, will sponsor a Candidate’s Forum from 6 p.m. until 8:05 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, in the Upper Jewell Building at KCKCC, 7250 State Ave.

The forum will be taped for playback on the college’s Community Access Channel 17.

The format: Each candidate will have two minutes for introductory remarks. A panel of newspaper editors and neighborhood leaders will ask questions of each candidate. Candidates will have one minute to respond to each question. The panel will have the opportunity to ask follow-up questions. Each candidate will have one minute to make closing remarks. This will not be a debate.

Representatives will be allowed to speak for candidates who are not able to attend. However, these representatives will only be able to make opening and closing remarks.

The approximate schedule:
6 p.m. Opening remarks
6:05 p.m. Candidates for U.S. Senate
6:35 p.m. Candidates for U.S. Representative, Third District
7: 05 p.m. Candidates for State Representative, 36th District
7:35 p.m. Candidates for State Senate, Fifth District
8:05 p.m. Closing remarks

Rain, storms in forecast tonight and Wednesday

Scattered thunderstorms are expected across the area tonight and again on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Some storms may contain small hail but otherwise, widespread severe weather is not expected, the weather service said.

Temperatures will drop into the low to mid 30s Thursday morning as Canadian high pressure builds south across the lower Missouri Valley, according to the weather service.

These temperatures will likely result in the first frost of the season for areas along and north of Interstate 70, the weather service said.

Today’s forecast is sunny with a high near 77, according to the weather service. There will be a south wind of 5 to 13 mph with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Tonight, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m., the weather service said. The low will be around 57, with a south wind of 6 to 9 mph gusting to as high as 23 mph.

Wednesday, there is a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, most likely before 1 p.m. then a chance of showers, according to the weather service. The high will be near 60 with a north wind of 7 to 16 mph, gusting to as high as 24 mph.

Wednesday night, expect mostly clear skies, with a low of 38 and a north wind of 6 to 9 mph, the weather service said.

Thursday, temperatures will reach a high near 58 with an east northeast wind of 5 to 7 mph, according to the weather service. It will be sunny.

Thursday night, there is a 30 percent chance of showers after 1 a.m., the weather service said. The low will be around 46.

Friday’s forecast is mostly cloudy with a high near 67, the weather service said.

Friday night, expect mostly cloudy skies with a low of 61, according to the weather service.

Saturday, it will be mostly cloudy with a high near 78, the weather service said.
