Trick or treat at Alcott Arts Center
Trick or treat at the Alcott Arts Center, 180 S. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan., from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31. The theme of the event this year is “American Horror Story Side Show Freaks.” Volunteers are needed to dress in costume and give out candy to children. Donations of candy also were needed. Safe Halloween event planned
A safe Halloween event for children is planned from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 31 at the Eisenhower Recreation Center, 2901 N. 72nd St., Kansas City, Kan. The event is sponsored by the Wyandotte County Parks Department and Leavenworth Road Association. Planned are treats, games, free hot dogs and activities. Candy will be given to children.

Program on diabetes offered

BPU to hold energy efficiency workshop Nov. 1

The Board of Public Utilities will hold a free Energy Efficiency Workshop on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The event will demonstrate easy and effective weatherization and energy efficiency strategies to help consumers save electricity, water and money in their homes. The workshop will be held at the West Wyandotte Public Library, 1737 N.82nd St., Kansas City, Kan. Two sessions will be available, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Seating is limited. Meeting planned on restoring Bonner historical preservation group
A meeting to consider restoring the Bonner Springs Historical Preservation Society will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Bonner Springs Library, 201 N. Nettleton. The society has not been active in about a decade, with its main activity then working on getting the old Bonner Springs High School 1918 building listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Since January 2016, the Bonner Springs Library has held a Saturday morning coffee by the fireplace to discuss local history. Several board members from the Historical Preservation Society are active in that group, and the plan to bring back the society came out of these discussions.

Program to discuss ways to resolve anxiety and depression

Infant loss group to meet

Support group to address managing holiday grief
“Managing Grief During the Holidays” will be offered from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on five Wednesdays, Nov. 2, 9, 16, 30 and Dec. 7, at Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. BPU to meet Nov. 2
The Board of Public Utilities will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the BPU offices, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. On the agenda for the Nov. 2 meeting are the AMWA platinum award presentation, third quarter financial report, board comments, general manager comments and a closed executive session. The executive session will discuss a confidential matter that could be a personnel, legal or property matter.
There will be a BPU work session at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 2.
On the BPU work session agenda are a board update and general manager update; UG Commissioner Mike Kane’s comments; Kansas Open Meetings Act presentation by Ken Moore, UG attorney; a revenue forecast, and customer service policies. Both meetings are open to the public.

Chamber plans showcase event Nov. 2
The Kansas City, Kan., Area Chamber of Commerce plans the Best of KCK and Wyandotte County from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at Children’s Mercy Park, Kansas City, Kan. The event will showcase diverse, collaborative and vibrant businesses. Individual tickets are $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers, and are $20 on the day of the event. Support group offered on managing grief during holidays

A support group is offered from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays for managing grief during the holidays. A certified grief counselor will lead the group. Community Conversation on Racism planned
A Community Conversation on Racism is scheduled at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, at the First Christian Church, 148 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs. This is the third forum on the topic, the first was at the church and the second was at the library. The format of the upcoming forum will be small group discussions.

UG Commission scheduled to meet
The Unified Government Commission is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, at the Commission Chambers, City Hall, lobby level, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan.

Veterans Day Commemoration to be Nov. 5
The annual Veterans Day Commemoration will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Salvation Army Harbor Light Village, 6723 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. It is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6401 of Wyandotte County. Jerry Jarrett, Bonner Springs, a Vietnam War veteran, will be the guest speaker, Jarrett is a Silver Star recipient. The Washington High School Air Force Junior ROTC, the Piper High School Music in Motion and the Salvation Army Music Ensemble will appear. A brunch and commemorative displays are part of the program. This year, on the 25th anniversary of Desert Storm, there will be a special recognition of Desert Storm veterans. It is also the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, and the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, and there will be a special recognition of World War II and Vietnam War veterans.

Library plans Day of the Dead program

The West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., plans a Day of the Dead program at noon Saturday, Nov. 5. Those attending will learn about the holiday, explore altars, decorate sugar skulls, have their face painting and do a craft. There will be live music and pan de muerto.

Friends of Grinter plan chili supper Nov. 5
The Friends of Grinter annual fundraiser chili supper will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5. The event will be held at the Grinter Barn, 1400 S. 78th, Kansas City, Kan. All-you-can-eat chili will be $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12, and will include hot dogs, drink and dessert. There also will be a silent auction with many gift items. The Grinter House will be open for tours from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Author describes memories of Pearl Harbor
Author Dorinda Nicholson will speak at a program at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Main Kansas City, Kan., Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave. She will discuss her memories of being a small child living on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

Free Resource Fair offered at Bonner library
A free Resource Fair is offered at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, at the Bonner Springs Library, 201 N. Nettleton, Bonner Springs. It is sponsored by the Western Wyandotte Citizens Advisory Council. Information will be provided on topics such as food assistance, mental health services assistance, utility assistance, emergency services assistance, nutrition assistance, shelters, safe homes and domestic violence assistance, and veterans assistance. At least 14 organizations will have a table.

UG Commission scheduled to meet
The Unified Government Commission is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Commission Chambers, City Hall, lobby level, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan.

Mayor’s Downtown Holiday Lighting Festival to be Nov. 18
The 12t annual Mayor’s Downtown Holiday Lighting Festival will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, in the City Hall plaza, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan. The event starts at 4 p.m. at the first floor of City Hall. Santa and Mrs. Claus will attend, musical groups will perform, holiday characters will be present, and a tree decorating contest will be held in conjunction with the mayor’s tree lighting, planning for 7 p.m.

Dialogue continues on reducing community violence

A dialogue on reducing community violence will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Sumner Academy, 1610 N. 8th St., Kansas City, Kan. It is sponsored by the Mayor’s Clergy Roundtable. Those who attend will be in groups of 10 to 15 people with a facilitator assigned to lead the dialogue. Police officers will join in the small group discussions. Another dialogue is scheduled at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the Patricia Diane Kane Community Center, 3130 N. 122nd St., Kansas City, Kan.

Canteen dance and concert planned
A 1940s canteen dance and concert is planned to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor at 7 p.m. Dec. 3 at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kan. I-70 ramp now open to traffic

The eastbound I-70 to northbound I-635 ramp that had been closed for bridge deck pavement repair work is now open, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

The ramp reopened to unrestricted traffic Friday afternoon. All repair work was completed and the ramp fully opened to traffic.
