Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church Knights of Columbus will hold a breakfast fundraiser after the 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Masses on Sunday, Oct. 23, at the parish, 22nd and Parallel Avenue, Kansas City, Kan. There will be scrambled eggs with chorizo, fried potatoes, tortilla and fruit cocktail. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for those 10 and under.

First Christian Church of Bonner Springs, 148 N. Nettleton, is planning a garage sale during Autumnfest from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.

Grinter Chapel United Methodist Church, 7819 Swartz Road, Kansas City, Kan., will hold a chili supper fundraiser from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29. Included will be all-you-can-eat chili or vegetable soup or hot dogs. The charge is $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and younger. The drink is included. There is a also a Trunk and Treat planned from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at the church.

Risen Lamb International Church of the Nazarene, located in the Turner area of Kansas City, Kan., has announced the opening of the Risen Lamb Prayer Room and Retreat Center. On location at their church at 5301 Metropolitan Avenue, the prayer room and retreat center is open to the public for daytime retreats. All individuals or small groups seeking a quiet, sacred space to gather, pray, meditate, journal or read resources about prayer are welcome. The prayer room provides a peaceful space for solitude or can be scheduled in advance for groups of up to eight people. Guests seeking spiritual guidance may schedule a time of spiritual direction with one of the pastoral staff, and groups may inquire about scheduling a member of the pastoral team to lead or speak at a retreat. KCK school board to meet Tuesday
The Kansas City, Kan., Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, in the Conservatory on the third floor of the Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools Central Office and Training Center, 2010 N. 59th St., Kansas City, Kan. On the agenda will be a discussion and action on a memorandum of understanding for concurrent enrollment, and other regular business.

Dialogue on reducing violence in community to be Oct. 25
A dialogue on reducing community violence will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Harmon High School, 2400 Steele Road, Kansas City, Kan. Sponsored by the Mayor’s Clergy Roundtable, four dialogues will place those who attend into groups of 10 to 15 people, with a facilitator assigned to lead the dialogue. It is a follow-up to the community forum held Sept. 20 to start a dialogue on ideas for reducing violence in Kansas City, Kan. Registration for the dialogue will begin at 6 p.m. The discussions will continue on how the community and law enforcement can work together to make Kansas City, Kan., a safer place to live. The dialogues are open to the public. Dialogues are scheduled Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Sumner Academy, 1610 N. 8th St., Kansas City, Kan.; and at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the Patricia Diane Kane Community Center (at the Piper district complex), 3130 N. 122nd St., Kansas City, Kan.

Third District Job Fair to be Oct. 27
U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder, R-3rd Dist., has announced that the Third District Job Fair will be held on Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Burke Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave. The job fair will facilitate face-to-face meetings between those seeking employment and local employers who are currently hiring. The job fair includes a special morning hour exclusively for veterans. The hours of the job fair are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 27. The 9 to 10 a.m. hour is open exclusively to veterans. Job seekers are advised to dress as if they’re going to a job interview and bring several copies of their resume. There is no registration or fee required to attend. BPU, UG Commission to meet in joint session on Oct. 27
The Board of Public Utilities and the Unified Government Commission will meet together at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, in the fifth floor conference room, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan. At the meeting, the BPU and UG Commission will discuss right-of-way and infrastructure issues. The two groups are discussing putting utilities underground in areas, including along Leavenworth Road. The BPU also has been invited to attend the 7 p.m. full Commission meeting Oct. 27 and may have a quorum present there. At the 7 p.m. meeting Oct. 27 at the Commission Chambers, lobby level, City Hall, planning and zoning items, and other items, are expected to be on the agenda. The meetings are open to the public.

Boo Bash Halloween Party to be Oct. 29
The 4th Annual Boo Bash Halloween Party will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs. The party is on a bigger scale this year with events throughout the library. Events include a live disc jockey playing terrifying tunes, scary stories by the fireplace, pumpkin decorating, a storywalk outside the library, and candy. Those attending may wear their costumes.

BPU to hold energy efficiency workshop Nov. 1
The Board of Public Utilities will hold a free Energy Efficiency Workshop on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The event will demonstrate easy and effective weatherization and energy efficiency strategies to help consumers save electricity, water and money in their homes. The workshop will be held at the West Wyandotte Public Library, 1737 N.82nd St., Kansas City, Kan. Two sessions will be available, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Seating is limited. The Friends of Grinter annual fundraiser chili supper will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5. The event will be held at the Grinter Barn, 1400 S. 78th, Kansas City, Kan. All-you-can-eat chili will be $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12, and will include hot dogs, drink and dessert. There also will be a silent auction with many gift items. The Grinter House will be open for tours from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Wife-carry event highlights Reola Grant Center fundraiser

Two couples, one from Nebraska and one from Arkansas, competed in a wife-carry (also called a fireman’s challenge) contest Saturday afternoon at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan.

The event was a fundraiser for the Reola Grant Center, which has a food pantry in Kansas City, Kan.

The two couples were running side-by-side on an obstacle course until a few feet from the finish line, when the couple from Omaha, Neb., took a tumble.

The two young couples ran a course of 253.5 meters, which will qualify them to move on to the next level of competition. The winner of the national event will win a trip to Finland to compete in the international contest.

Said Pablo Pagliani of Fayetteville, Ark., who with his wife Lisa won the contest, “We didn’t think it would be that tough.”

The Paglianis competed while wearing Halloween costumes because there was also a costume contest at the event today. They entered the wife carry event after they saw it on Facebook, Pagliani said.

The couple from Omaha, Neb., Kyle Thomsen and Jackie Uhing, said it would be cool to go to Finland – a prize of the national contest.

“I was trying to go too fast and leaned too far forward,” Thomsen said after the race. Still, the race was fun, he said.

The two couples used the Estonian carry, not the fireman’s carry. The fireman’s carry is over-the-shoulder, while in the Estonian carry the wife is upside down.

Contest coordinator Janice Witt, who also is the executive director of the Reola Grant Center, said both couples are winners. Both received trophies. The race is sanctioned by a wife-carry organization.

The first-place couple also received beer as a prize, she said. The prize was donated by Boulevard beer.
