Stormy weather in today’s forecast

It’s going to be stormy most of the day, with a short break for most areas around midday, according to the National Weather Service.

Storms return this afternoon/evening and could become strong, the weather service said. Primary hazards will be gusty winds, hail, and moderate to locally heavy rainfall.

Expect drier conditions during the day Wednesday, but storms return Wednesday night through Friday night, according to the weather service. No severe weather is expected at this time but heavy rainfall is possible.

Widespread rainfall amounts of around 1 to 2 inches will be possible through Friday night and early Saturday morning, according to the weather service. The highest chance for heavy rain looks to occur Thursday into Friday.

Today, the high will be near 80 with a 50 percent chance of rain and storms, the weather service said.

Tonight, the chance of rain and storms is 50 percent, with a low of 63, according to the weather service.

Wednesday, expect a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1 p.m. The high will be near 75.

Wednesday night, there will be a low of about 65, with a 40 percent chance of showers and storms after 1 a.m., according to the weather service.

Thursday, expect a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 78, the weather service said.

Thursday night, there is a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a low of 67, according to the weather service.

KCK man charged in connection with Westport shootings

A Kansas City, Kan., man, Kelvin Clark, 29, was charged in the Jackson County, Mo., Circuit Court in connection with the 3 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, shootings in the Westport area in Kansas City, Mo.

Seven counts of first-degree accessory assault and seven counts of armed criminal action were filed against Clark, according to a statement from the Jackson County, Mo., prosecutor’s office. Prosecutors are requesting a bond of $250,000.

The probable cause statement says that shots were fired near large crowds of people in Westport early Sunday.

Kansas City, Mo., police officers responded after hearing shots fired and found several victims suffering from gunshot wounds, the probable cause statement says.

One victim told police he got “weird vibes” from guys in the area, hurried into a parking lot, and was struck by a black vehicle that knocked him to the ground. He was hit in the thigh by gunfire, he told police.

Kansas City, Mo., police detectives viewed video surveillance of the incident from a Westport business, and they said it showed the black vehicle striking the victim, the probable cause statement said. The video also showed two males exiting the black vehicle and firing shots toward the running victim and other victims, according to the probable cause statement.

The suspects then fled from the area in the black vehicle, with police obtaining the license number, and then it was involved in a car crash near 39th and Southwest Trafficway in Kansas City, Mo., according to a witness quoted in the probable cause statement. The two males in the car ran away, and one of them dropped a gun on the sidewalk, the witness stated.

Officers took Clark into custody in the area, where he was seen running, according to the probable cause statement. A female suspect was taken into custody inside the car, according to the statement.

Clark told police, “I don’t know what’s going on. I was the passenger in a wreck and then I ran,” according to the probable cause statement.

The female suspect told police they were all in Westport when the two males in the car began talking to another person. The female said she was inside the car when gunfire started and then ducked down, according to the probable cause statement.

According to the probable cause statement, Clark later told police he was in the back seat of a car that was in a wreck. He said he was too intoxicated to remember who else was in the car, and stated he was not involved in an altercation, according to the probable cause statement.

The probable cause statement does not contain information about the whereabouts of the driver.

No. 3 KCKCC plays host to Cowley in volleyball showdown Wednesday

It’s the frying pan into the fire for Kansas City Kansas Community College volleyball team when the No. 3 ranked Lady Blue Devils finally open their home season Wednesday night.

Their unbeaten winning streak ended in the Pasco Hernando State Tournament in Port Richey, Fla., over the weekend, the Lady Blue Devils (11-1) host No. 16 ranked and perennial Jayhawk Conference power Cowley College at 6:30 p.m.

The 2011 national champion, Cowley has been in the national tournament the last 11 years in a row. Since the national title, the Lady Tigers were second in the nation in 2012, third in 2013 and 2014 and sixth last season. As a special feature, the first 25 students to arrive with student ID’s will be treated to free pizza by the Blue Devil volleyball team.

KCKCC closed out a run of 12 straight road matches in the Pasco Hernando tournament where they Blue Devils took three of four matches.

Their only loss came in the second of two matches on Friday when the Blue Devils fell to the host team, No. 17 Pasco Hernando, 25-22, 25-19, 25-19.

“Pasco Hernando played very well against us and I didn’t feel we played to the level we’re capable of playing,” said KCKCC coach Mary Bruno. “Overall, however, I felt we got solid performances from everyone – a good weekend.”

The Blue Devils started with a 3-0 blanking of Cape Fear Community College, winning 25-19, 25-19, 26-24 on Friday. On Saturday, KCKCC defeated South Florida State College 25-20, 25-23, 27-25 and Colorado Northwestern 25-17, 25-20, 22-25, 25-19.
