Public community forum planned tonight

The Mayor’s Clergy Roundtable will hold a public community forum at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Kansas City Kansas Community College TEC Center, 6565 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan.

The discussion will be about how the community can reduce violence, according to Unified Government officials. Ideas for reducing violence are welcome.

Registration and signup begin at 6 p.m., and the forum will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The community forum is open to the public, and members of the public are invited to share their thoughts.

KCK school district reaches out to veterans at upcoming job fair

The Human Resources Department of the Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools is looking at military veterans as part of its current employment recruitment efforts.

The district will be attending the RecruitMilitary Kansas City Veteran Job Fair scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.

KCKPS is currently recruiting to hire for the 2017-2018 school year. With nearly 4,000 full and part-time staff, the district is always looking for qualified candidates in a diverse number of fields from teachers to food service professionals to technology specialists to welders and mechanics, according to a spokesman.

In addition, as part of its Diploma+ initiative, KCKPS is looking for field professionals who can meet nontraditional job qualifications. Diploma+ provides students with the opportunity to graduate from high school with a high school diploma PLUS additional education-credentials or experiences (such as college credits, a technical certification, a work internship, or acceptance into the military).

As a pathway to the Diploma+ goal, KCKPS will be establishing College and Career Academies at all the high school for the 2017-2018 school year, the spokesman said. These academies will focus on the following career themed areas:
• Information Technology
• Health Sciences
• Business and Finance
• Human and Public Services
• Architecture, Engineering and Construction
• Advanced Manufacturing, Transportation and Logistics

“Members of our military received specialized training in a number of fields that can make them ideal candidates for our College and Career Academies or other positions with the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools,” said Cynthia Fulks, recruitment manager for KCKPS.

Heat index might reach 100 today

Summer is getting in a late blast today as the high will be about 91 with a heat index approaching 100, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

All week, temperatures will run nearly 10 to 15 degrees above normal, the weather service said.

Wednesday also will be hot, according to the weather service, with a high of 88 predicted.

Storms will be possible to the north of the Greater Kansas City area on Wednesday night into Thursday, the weather service said.

More concentrated thunderstorm activity is possible Saturday night through Sunday, as a slow-moving cold front moves through the region, according to the weather service.

Tonight, there will be a low of 72 with a south wind of 7 mph, the weather service said.

Wednesday will be sunny with a high near 88, according to the weather service, with a south wind of 7 to 11 mph.

Wednesday night, the low will be around 69, with a south wind of 7 to 9 mph, the weather service said.

Thursday, skies will be mostly sunny with a high of 87, according to the weather service.

Thursday night, the low will be 67, the weather service said.

Friday’s forecast is sunny with a high near 86, the weather service said. Friday night, the low will be around 67.

Saturday will be sunny with a high of 85, the weather service said.

Saturday night, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, according to the weather service. The low will be 66.

Sunday, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high of 81, the weather service said.
