Grinter Place plans car show Saturday

by Mary Rupert

Grinter Place, 78th and K-32, is planning a car show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24.

The car show is sponsored by the Friends of Grinter Place, and the event is free to the public. People will be able to show their cars, according to the Friends.

There will be a barbecue, with sandwiches and soft drinks available for sale.

Lawn games are planned for visitors, including croquet, bean bag toss and ring toss. Anyone may participate.

There will be tours of the historic Grinter House available during the car show, and the gift shop will be open. There is a $3 charge for tours of Grinter House, 1420 S. 78th. Grinter Place, built in 1857, is the oldest house still standing in Wyandotte County.

Bill Nicks, new site director at Grinter Place, a state historic site, said Grinter Place is now open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays, from May to October. The museum will not be open from November through April, he said.

“It’s using our resources where we think it would be best used,” he said.

He said one of his goals as site director is to increase the number of visitors. He said he will meet with the Friends of Grinter Place to discuss ways of increasing visitors.

He said the annual Grinter Place Summerfest will continue next year, and he would like schoolchildren to continue visiting the historic site during the months it is open.
