Democratic breakfast planned Saturday

The Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast will meet this Saturday, June 18, at The Dotte Spot Bar and Grill, 8123 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan.

The speaker will be State Rep. Tom Burroughs, D-33rd Dist., Democratic leader of the Kansas House of Representatives.

There will also be a candidate forum featuring the three candidates for the Democratic nomination for the 3rd Congressional District.

The breakfast buffet will be available at 8:15 a.m. and the program begins at 9:15. All Democrats are invited to attend.

The cost for the breakfast is $10, or $6 for students and those on limited incomes. Also, there is a $2 charge for coffee if those attending are not purchasing breakfast. Those attending are not required to purchase breakfast.

Man injured when pickup truck hits wall on I-70

An injury was reported after a pickup truck hit the wall on eastbound I-70 east of the 78th Street exit in Kansas City, Kan., according to a Kansas Turnpike Authority trooper’s report.

A 65-year-old Kansas City, Mo., man driving a Chevrolet pickup truck tried to veer to the middle lane and then went back to the first lane because of other vehicles, lost control and hit the wall, according to the trooper’s report.

The crash happened about 9:46 p.m. Tuesday, June 14.

The man was injured and taken to a hospital, according to the report.

Sporting KC begins Open Cup play tonight in Minnesota

Sporting KC begins its Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title defense tonight, facing Minnesota United FC (NASL) at National Sports Center Stadium in Blaine, Minn.

The round of 32 matchup will kick off at 7 p.m. with a live stream on SportingKC.com.

Sporting KC enters the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as reigning champions of the tournament, having defeated Philadelphia Union in a penalty shootout to win the 2015 title last September.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is a knockout-style competition that has been held annually since 1914 and is the third-longest running open soccer tournament in the world.

Should Sporting KC defeat Minnesota United FC, the club will enter Thursday’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup draw in which the remaining 16 teams will be placed in a set bracket for the remainder of the competition.
