Weather to turn dry for weekend

Rain showers will dampen the morning commute, but should gradually come to an end by late morning or early afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Dry, warm conditions are expected for the weekend.

Thunderstorms are possible late Sunday night into much of early next week, according to the weather service.

It is too early to determine the severe potential with this activity, but a transition to a more active weather pattern is expected, the weather service said.

For the rest of today, there is a 30 percent chance of showers, the weather service said. Highs will be in the upper 60s.

Tonight, the low will be in the lower 50s, with partly cloudy skies, according to the weather service.

Saturday, highs will be in the lower 70s, with east winds around 10 mph, the weather service said.

Saturday night, lows will be in the upper 50s, with southeast winds around 10 mph in the evening becoming light and variable, the weather service said.

On Sunday, it will be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 70s, and southeast winds of 10 to 15 mph, according to the weather service.

On Sunday night, expect a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with lows in the mid 60s.

KCK music student benefit planned Sunday

A blues music benefit for Kansas City, Kan., music students is planned from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, May 22, at BB’s Lawnside BBQ, 1205 E. 85th St., Kansas City, Mo.

The annual event raises funds for the KCK Schools Foundation for Excellence. Donations are $10 each.

Six blues bands are scheduled to play: Brody Buster Band, Millage Gilbert and the Downhome Blues Band, Lonesome Hank and the Heartaches, Turkey Bone and Full Count, John Paul and the Flying Circus, RocknRick and the Roadmasterz.

The event is organized by Scott Mackey, who said last year’s event raised $3,000 for the Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools. He said the district will determine the use for the funds, and he hopes some funds go toward musical instruments.

Mackey said he enjoyed playing musical instruments as a kid and now enjoys listening to blues and rock music.

“Learning how to play music is a very good goal and it helps with life,” he said.

T-Bones soak AirHogs, 9-4, in home opener

A little rain didn’t stop the T-Bones from storming back to win 9-4 in the season opener Thursday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, Kansas City, Kan.

A light, cool rain fell from the 2nd inning through the 8th inning at the game, which had an attendance of 5,297. But all the fun activities of American Association baseball went on as usual.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning, the T-Bones maintained the lead into the 6th inning, when the Texas Airhogs scored four runs on Kansas City starter Casey Barnes. Texas led 4-2, but only until the bottom of the 6th.

After coming back to tie 4-4 in the 6th inning on a home run from designated hitter Anthony Gallas, the T-Bones then went ahead by two runs on a single from right fielder Christian Torres. The T-Bones added extra runs in the 8th inning.

Barnes got the win for the T-Bones.

The game had its usual components of funny contests between the innings, races around the bases, T-shirt giveaways and prizes that kept the tone of the game light. But this day, the game opened in a much more serious atmosphere.

The season opener was notable for a special tribute to Detective Brad Lancaster, who was killed last week in the line of duty near the Hollywood Casino grounds. A police honor guard presented the colors, and Detective Lancaster’s children threw out the first ball.

The T-Bones are giving two tickets free to police officers in Greater Kansas City from May 19 to 25. The tickets are based on availability, and officers will be asked for identification.

The next game will be at 7:05 p.m. Friday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark when the T-Bones and AirHogs meet again in the four-game home stand. The Falcon skydiving team is scheduled to make an appearance, and it will be $1 hot dog night. According to the forecast, there should be dry weather at game time. For tickets, call the box office at 913-328-5618.
