Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Wyandotte County

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for northeastern Wyandotte County from 10:26 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. today.

At 10:25 a.m. a severe thunderstorm was located over Westwood moving northeast at 20 mph. Besides northeastern Wyandotte County, this warning is in effect for northeastern Johnson County, northwestern Jackson County and southwestern Clay County.

Ping-pong ball size hail and 60 mph wind gusts are hazards of this storm.

People and animals may be injured if they are outdoors. Expect hail damage to roofs, siding, windows and vehicles Expect wind damage to roofs, siding and trees.

For your protection, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of the building, the weather service said.

Torrential rainfall is occurring with the storm and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

KCKCC golfers 7th at halfway mark of national tournament

Kansas City Kansas Community College is seventh at the halfway mark of the 2016 NJCAA Division II National Golf Tournament being played at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind.

With a 607 total on rounds of 306 and 301, the Blue Devils are in striking distance of Mississippi Gulf Coast (596), Illinois Central (599) and Owens Community College (600) for as high as a fourth place finish.

Two southern powers are locked in a head-to-head battle for the 2016 championship. Tyler Junior College out of Tyler, Tex., holds a one-shot lead over South Mountain, Ariz. Tyler is 3-under-par at 573; South Mountain 2-under at 574 with Kirkwood (Iowa) a distant third at 585.

The Blue Devils are being led by a trio of Jeremy Dunham, Zach Spencer and Dalton Ayres. Dunham (77-74-151) and Spencer (76-75-151) are in seven-way tie for 31st place while Ayres (75-77-152) is a stroke back in a tie for 43rd at 152. Colton Allen (78-81-159) is tied for 82nd and Matt Thayne (84-77-160) shares 88th.

More storms possible today

After morning storms moved through Wyandotte County, there are more storms that may arrive in the Kansas City area today.

Weather update: The severe thunderstorm warning for Johnson County has been lifted. Nearby counties in Missouri are now under a weather advisory. One new storm is predicted to hit northeastern Johnson County, and Edwardsville in Wyandotte County, in the next few minutes, according to the National Weather Service.

More storms are possible through the rest of the day. These storms carry with them a chance of large hail, damaging winds and a few tornadoes with the initial storms, according to the weather service. Then the threat will transition to straight-line winds, large hail and possibly minor flooding as storms move east and the evening wears on, according to the weather service.

Today’s high will be near 83, and a south wind may be from 9 to 16 mph, gusting to 24 mph.

Tonight, showers and thunderstorms are likely, mainly between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 66, and a south wind of 10 to 13 mph will become east in the evening.

Storms will be ongoing on Friday morning, and may continue through much of the day. A few strong storms are possible in the evening or early overnight hours Friday across eastern Kansas and far western Missouri, but will depend strongly on how much clearing occurs on Friday afternoon.

Friday, the high will be near 77 with a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms and showers, the weather service said. A south southeast wind o 9 to 13 mph is in the forecast.

Friday night, the low will be around 64, with a 60 percent chance of precipitation.

Saturday, the high will be 80, and there is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, the weather service said.
