Special education teacher recruitment fair scheduled Thursday

The Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools is seeking licensed special education teachers for the 2016-17 school year. Teachers are needed for early childhood, elementary, middle and high school, as well as adaptive PE, deaf and hard of hearing, visually impaired and more.

Interested persons can get more information by attending the Special Education Teacher Recruitment Fair set for 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at the KCKPS Central Office and Training Center, 2010 N. 59th St.

Before attending the fair, interested persons should:

• Bring a current resume and an unofficial transcript

Financial assistance may be provided to a limited number of general education teachers to pursue coursework to obtain licensure to teach special education.

Holocaust presentation scheduled today

A proclamation will be presented at 1 p.m. Monday, May 2, by Gov. Sam Brownback at a Kansas Holocaust Commemoration Service.

The event will be at the Kansas State Historical Museum, Topeka, and is open to the public.

The keynote speaker at the event will be Nancy Geise, author of “Auschwitz #34027 – The Joe Rubinstein Story.”

Car crashes after fleeing trooper on I-70 in KCK

A Toyota Camry crashed off I-70 at the Turner Diagonal Saturday night after fleeing from a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper.

According to the trooper’s report, the Camry was stopped on I-70 westbound, just west of 57th Street, for a seat belt violation, around 8:36 p.m. Saturday, April 30.

After the trooper made contact with the driver, the car fled the scene westbound on I-70, exiting at the Turner Diagonal, the trooper’s report stated. The Camry then struck the left barrier wall and went east into the ditch, striking a tree, the report stated.

The driver of the Camry, a 23-year-old man from Kansas City, Kan., was injured and taken to a hospital, the report stated. He was not wearing a seat belt.

A 25-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man who was a passenger in the Camry, also was taken to a hospital, the report said. He also was not wearing a seat belt, according to the report.

A 25-year-old Kansas City, Kan., woman who was a passenger in the Camry was not injured, the report stated. She was wearing a seat belt.

A fourth unknown male passenger in the Camry fled the scene of the accident, the trooper’s report stated.
